Shelly stared at the swaying palm tree outside of their screened-in porch. Sunlight was just beginning to peek into the room.  She hugged her knees to her chest as she listened to the branches make their signature twittering noise.  She started picking at her toe.  

As a dim sunbeam began to light up the room, she spotted movement on the orange shag carpet just inside the sliding glass door.  Her eyes focused on what looked like a spider, but a big, oddly shaped spider. 

For a minute, Shelly wanted to yell for someone to come help her, but her parents and Sunny were still asleep.  Then she looked closer at the little lumbering creature and realized it was her pet hermit crab!  But he didn’t have a shell!
