The Howling
An oppressive night
a moon on the rise.
A chilly mist hangs
in the air.
A kilted to figure –
vanguard of the dawn –
with sword unsheathed.
The blood of his enemy
spattered ‘cross his face.
Glory is but a thing of the
moment,
whilst honor
goes on for a lifetime.
The fever of battle
a fire in his eyes
A Pipers ghost fills the air
with slow, chaotic melodies.
A rumble of thunder,
a flash of celestial light.
A battle cry screams
across the moors.
Preface
In any competitive sport, be it basketball, football, hockey, the SCA or fencing, there is one element that they all have in common: the need for a warrior mentality. This mindset should not be perceived as a need for aggression, violence or hostility. On the contrary, the warrior mindset demands a sense of honor, fair play, emotional self-control and rational thinking, as well as physical strength and endurance.
As for blood sports, the warrior mentality should never tolerate the intentional spilling of blood or rendering of injury. Yes, accidents and injuries do occur in the arena of competition. One does not participate in these activities without accepting this risk. Yet, there is nothing to be gained -- no true respect to be earned – by the purposeful injuring of one's opponent, nor in the celebration of their injuries.
As for the concept of honor, I have come to see honor from more than one perspective. First and foremost, the concept of honor is largely defined within a cultural framework. Every culture holds its own set of ideas regarding what is honorable. This can largely be attributed to such elements as cultural history, language and social morals. This would also apply to the subject of ethics, as the concepts of honor and ethics are often intertwined.
However, it would seem reasonable to believe that at its core, there would exist a common element on which all cultural ideas of honor
