Jon Rister is a practicing instructor in Texas, teaching martial arts since 1987. He has studied and achieved instructor rank in kali-eskrima under Magulang Na Guro Dan Inosanto, in wing chun under Sifu Francis Fong, and in jun fan jeet kune do under Sifu Dan Inosanto and Larry B. Hartsell. Among Jon Rister’s proudest achievements, more so than his own accomplishments, is for him to have seen three generations of his own students achieve instructor rank.

Hand-to-hand combat is the most ancient form of competition known to man. But hand-to-hand combat is also the most realistic form of decisive war tactics known to man. The latter is the most important and yet most misunderstood. Hollywood grabs the exciting aspects of fighting tactics and glorifies them until they become commonly accepted as effective in the street. Fighters learn the hard way, when they survive an encounter they lose. Learning from those experiences is easy. Learning where to procure continued training for life preservation is not.
There are experts
everywhere. The fact is, with the incredible dynamics involved in a true fight for one’s life, many things can work. However, these instances are not the ones we can afford to lose. We do not take chances when it comes to our families’ lives. So, when it comes to training our mind, body, tactics and intentions, we must discern wisely.
I began training with Sifu Rister in 1991. When I started training, I had to unlearn
many ineffective tactics I brought to the table. They were good martial arts
but very poor for survival in the street. Following the brutal unlearning process, I began training in street-effective tactics with and without weapons. We trained on grass, dirt, amongst the trees, and on concrete. We geared up to the max to ensure we could test the tactics we learned at live speed and intensity. My confidence level grew over years and years of training.
The significance of this is not to say that I learned the best stuff, but to highlight the fact that what Sifu Rister trains today, includes little if any of the same tactics we trained so hard to learn back then! He is an ego-less forward thinker—testing theories, interviewing combatants, training cutting edge professionals (S.W.A.T. teams and Personal Protection Specialists), learning from the best in the world (Dan Inosanto and Francis Fong) and constantly evolving with the natural progression of real-world (not sport) fighting tactics. This should be one of the key factors in determining a good source for learning to prepare for a life saving combative event.
The other significant thing Sifu Rister teaches that sets him apart, is the importance of street fighting mentality. Fighting for your life, or to protect another, often means your instincts, level of aggression, and your kill switch must be maximized. A sweet mother of two can be the nicest person you have ever met, but will likely become an enraged, uncontrollable animal when her children are being abducted in front of her eyes. This mentality is one we all must learn to capture before a fight for a life occurs, and Sifu Rister teaches it well.
In my profession of Personal Security, we are duty-bound to protect the lives of our clients. We encourage diverse training by way of defensive tactics for our operators. As an ex-cop, I know what is typically taught to the masses, as most will not put in the effort required to attain a true level of competency to win a fight. I also realize many criminals have a natural fight mentality that delivers them success over many good guys due strictly to their sheer evil determination to never quit, to never lose, and to win brutally.
