My name is Roy Shepard and I’m a former IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) Special Forces Operator. During my military service, I took part in countless missions behind enemy lines and later trained young cadets as a Master Sergeant. I specialize in weapons training, stealth and camouflage, and Krav Maga. I’ve been in active reserve duty for the past 20 years and spent much of that time formulating and implementing defense strategies and drills in military bases all over Israel. Highly trained in martial arts, I specialize in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, and Russian Systema—with both hand-to-hand combat and melee weapon handling. I am also an expert marksman with both close-quarters and long-range weapons.

The IDF is one of the most effective militaries in the world with proven strategies and tactics that have kept Israel safe for the last 70 years. The harsh reality is that Israel is a small country surrounded by hostile nations that have been intent on destroying it since it was formed in 1948. The IDF has defended Israel in eight full-out wars and fended off many incursions and terrorist attacks. The vast tasks of the IDF span from search and rescue missions to preventing and containing terrorist activities.

    It’s pretty safe to say that in the near future you’re unlikely to face a zombie apocalypse, or any other dramatic sci-fi or fantasy horror event for that matter. However catastrophes—such as a biological weapon attack, economic collapse, or natural disaster—are more of a threat, and together with the rising incidents of violent crime and global terrorist activity, we are more at risk now than any other time in the modern age.

    On June 8, 2016, in Tel Aviv, Israel, two terrorists from Hebron, dressed in business suits, opened fire on diners in a popular restaurant, Max Brenner, in the Sarona Market. They killed four people and badly injured three more before security forces managed to overpower them.

    CHAPTER 1

    SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

    SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

    Being aware of your surroundings is the first step toward having situational awareness. It enables you to recognize when something is wrong and may even help you avoid a tragedy.

    The remains of the bus after a suicide bomber detonated a device outside it.

    On a typical Tuesday afternoon on February 19, 2002 Shaul Deri, a bus driver on the 961 Metula—Tiberias line in northern Israel, noticed something suspicious. It was a hot, sunny day but a passenger getting onto the bus was wearing a heavy raincoat. And on closer look Deri noticed some wires poking out of his jacket. Deri responded by grabbing the man’s wrist and with a swift kick pushed him off the bus. He quickly shut the bus door and drove away. Sure enough, a few seconds later, the man exploded. The bus was destroyed but Deri’s situational awareness and quick reactions not only saved his life but the lives of all 43 bus passengers.

    Determine the Norm

    Visiting somewhere new for the first time is always new and exciting. That’s why we like to travel and discover new places. After a short while, you get used to your new surroundings. You might learn exactly where to buy your morning coffee, the quickest route to your hotel, and even start to recognize a few of the locals, for example. This is due to your brain’s inbuilt pattern-recognition facility, and why new situations and experiences quickly become familiar. In fact the brain is by far the most powerful computer on Earth—no machine so far has been able to replicate its abilities (although it’s not for the lack of trying).

    The brain analyzes your environment and determines a base, usually referred to as the norm or standard, and in professional terms the baseline.

    In a fancy restaurant, the norm is to be smartly dressed in clean clothes, speak quietly, and behave politely. A diner dressed in dirty or ripped clothes that shouts or slurs, is likely to catch everyone’s attention, since they are outside of the norm for that situation.

    On a warm summer’s day, when the sky is clear and blue, most people will be wearing light or thin clothing, and this is registered in your brain as the norm. If you notice someone wearing a heavy raincoat and a hat with their hands stashed in their pockets, you immediately sense that they are outside of the norm. Your brain sends alert signals to your gut and you feel that something is wrong.

    Most of the time, people just ignore these feelings or don’t have the awareness to even notice them in the first place. However, the first step in being prepared is to notice your surroundings and evaluate each situation according to the norm, and this is where ‘The Color System’ comes in.

    The Color System

    Colonel Cooper of the US Marine Corps, who served during WW2 and the Korean War, devised a Color Code for the soldiers under his command. Depending on what they observed in the immediate environment they could instantly categorize each situation according to its color, and be mentally prepared for combat when needed. The following traffic-light system is an upgraded version of Cooper’s original observation strategy and can help you categorize any situation even in non-combat environments.

    WHITE-UNAWARE: This is when you doze off in the bus or train, or use your cellphone while walking along, for example. When you are in the white zone, you are putting yourself in danger, as you are not paying attention to anything around you.

    GREEN-AWARE: You notice your surroundings, aware of everyone around you, and even take a look behind you every once in a while. Green is when everything seems normal and there is nothing out of the ordinary. Keep your hands out of your pockets so you’re ready to use them if needed.

    YELLOW-WARNING: You notice something outside the norm—something is wrong or out of place. For example, you hear a loud noise, see people running away, or identify an item or a person that should not be where they are supposed to be. Your gut will scream at you with all its might. You just need to listen and get ready for action.

    RED-DANGER: Also known as SHTF (sh*t hits the fan) and it seems like chaos is all around. In this scenario, an assailant may be threatening you with a firearm or attacking you, this is called by the pros active shooter scenario. At this point, your thoughts must change from strategic to tactical.

    In the RED zone - notice the flow of events, what the assailant(s) is doing, their body language, and behavior. Evaluate the situation and try to predict what will happen in the next few seconds or even minutes. Think of every potential scenario, and ask what does the assailant want? For example, a mugger wants valuables and cash but wants to avoid arrest, whereas a terrorist is looking to create the maximum amount of disruption possible, and isn’t likely to be afraid of death or arrest.

    Anticipate where they will look next and when they would be distracted, so that you can take the appropriate action, whether that’s fighting back or relocating to a safer position.

    Situational awareness requires you to instantly recognize what you are up against and take immediate action. Using the Color System saves valuable seconds or even minutes, in case of an emergency, which may mean the difference between life and death.

    Allowing any device to distract your attention makes you an easy target.
