Chapter One: The Arrival

THE SKY WAS ORANGE, and the rings of Saturn shone bright above the spaceport. A shuttle landed with a hiss, and the passengers disembarked.

JARED STEPPED OUT OF the shuttle, his heart racing with excitement and anticipation. He had been traveling for months, and the prospect of finally setting foot on Saturn was exhilarating.

AS HE MADE HIS WAY through the spaceport, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The air was thick with tension, and the other travelers looked nervous and unsettled.

JARED APPROACHED THE customs desk, where a stern-looking officer was waiting.

NAME AND PURPOSE OF visit? the officer asked gruffly.

JARED, AND I'M HERE to join a research team on one of Saturn's moons, Jared replied.

THE OFFICER EYED HIM suspiciously, but eventually stamped his passport and waved him through.

JARED BREATHED A SIGH of relief and made his way to the baggage claim. As he waited for his bags, he noticed a woman watching him from across the room. She was tall and elegant, with piercing green eyes and a slight smile on her lips.

JARED FELT A FLICKER of recognition but couldn't place her face. He shrugged it off and continued to wait for his bags, but the woman remained fixed on him.

AFTER WHAT FELT LIKE an eternity, Jared retrieved his bags and made his way to the exit. The woman intercepted him before he could leave.

EXCUSE ME, SHE SAID, her voice soft and melodious. I couldn't help but notice you. Are you new here?

JARED NODDED, STILL trying to place her face.

I'M DR. ELISE PARKER, she said, extending her hand. I'm a research scientist here on Saturn.

JARED SHOOK HER HAND, feeling a jolt of electricity pass between them.

JARED, HE SAID. I'M here to join a research team as well.

DR. PARKER'S SMILE widened. How fortuitous. Perhaps we'll be working together.
