THE YOUTHFUL REBELLION of Miss Annie Courtney against her father and society came to its fateful conclusion one idyllic summer morning in June.

As her father’s coach halted before the steps of a dour pile of red brick well beyond London’s more fashionable districts, sudden fear roiled like icy acid in the pit of her stomach and she shivered a little although the air was pleasantly warm. The weathered brass plaque by the door proclaimed the building to be Professor Feversham’s Academy of Young Women’s Correctional Education. The word Correctional leaped out at her from the others. She shivered again as her father ushered her and her best friend, Sarah, through the door and into the unknown.

He had not committed to anything, yet. She could appear to give in, swear to be modest and good as he desired. Whatever happened here did not have to happen to her.

She traded a furtive glance with an obviously terrified Sarah. Poor Sarah. It was all Annie’s fault that Sarah had been dragged into this. She would have to be brave for her friend. She only hoped that would suffice to get them through their coming ordeal.

Annie gulped a little and gathered the tattered shreds of her courage while her slim fingers clenched until her knuckles went white. She would not be like those others. She was a strong, independent woman with
