About this ebook

How does this sound? After the  centuries of destructive, intense heat, post the floods, after waves of viral attacks, a man, a detective, is walking the ruined streets. Implanted with a neurocyber against his will, Clarke Maxwell is uncertain what the device in his head could do to him. He no longer knows who is in charge in this devastated city. Do the cops who forced him into the hospital really work for the Guardians in City Hall, or will he find that they are the criminals he was engaged to pursue?

What is certain is that Clarke must either lose the man who has been tailing him since he left the hospital, or, better still, ensnare him.

    Do you need a treat?

    Coming up.

Arule to shadowing is to wear something inconspicuous.

There was nothing remarkable about this punk’s uniform, designed by Lyme Backer, with the tight-fitting gold pants, blue below the knee, blue and yellow jersey with the big gold number ten and the wide shoulder pads, neat little sleeves cut high, all topped off with a metallic blue helmet. Half the population of the city was wearing exactly the same outfit. He was roughly my size, a bit above average, but what made him stand out from the crowd was his pink man-bag with the blue and yellow flowers.

You can only tail a pod if you already know where the occupant is going. You can’t call up another pod and say, Follow that! No street-craft needed to throw off the punk, it was easy. I called in at the bar, phoned for a pod to my home and had a beer this time. The tender was happy, the punk was left outside and I got in the pod.
