    Deathly Pleasure

    I was already struggling to jog, talk and breathe at the same time. I hadn’t reckoned on needing that degree of athleticism to continue my investigation.

    ‘You’re not answering my question,’ I moaned. ‘It matters. Not to you, but to me. I want to know. Tell me why you sapped me, or I’m peeling off, back to my apartment.’

    ‘You forgotten or something?’ she asked. She sounded as cool as a nurse taking my temperature. ‘You were tailing me. You followed me inside. You were waving a gun and I was unarmed. Sure I sapped you. What else should I have done?’

    ‘Does carrying a blackjack count as unarmed?’

    ‘Now you’re the one not answering the questions.’

    ‘Aw, nuts to this, I’m going.’

    That produced a result, she slowed to my pace. Tesla matched his stride to hers.

    ‘Guardian Lois, she told you about me? Maddy Carr?’

    ‘I don’t rightly recollect that she did.’

    ‘But she gave you a package, right?’ I would have nodded but in my breathless state, walking and nodding required too much coordination. ‘Lois called me into Guardian Hall and told me to...’

    ‘Look out for me,’ I wheezed, with a measure of satisfaction.

    ‘No, to look out for the package. Who the hell cares what happens to you? I camped out in your office block.’

    ‘With just crackers for sustenance.’
