Maddy Carr was too busy nursing her knee to cover up, or take any notice of Lieutenant Brass and Springer.
‘What’s she moaning about?’ Brass asked, addressing me instead of the injured party.
‘Just a little game we were having. Got out of hand,’ I answered. ‘This is a friend of mine, Maddy Carr.’
‘And yet I see you still got all your clothes on, Maxwell. Are you OK, Maddy? Did Maxwell here hurt you?’
‘Nah, I did it myself,’ she said without looking up.
‘Well now Maxwell, you need to come with us for a little chat.’
‘Yeah, nice and friendly little chat,’ added Springer.
‘You don’t impress me, with that frill around your neck,’ I spat out at Springer.
‘Not a frill, it’s a high collar.’
‘You know why I need to talk with you, Maxwell?’ said Brass.
‘I don’t know why you needed to break a door down to do it.’
‘We been on a stake-out, next door, where you murdered the old guy and cut his tongue out,’ Springer supplied. ‘Thought we should break in before you did some more damage, to your friend here.’ He leered at me. ‘Looks
