    Maddy Carr was too busy nursing her knee to cover up, or take any notice of Lieutenant Brass and Springer.

    ‘What’s she moaning about?’ Brass asked, addressing me instead of the injured party.

    ‘Just a little game we were having. Got out of hand,’ I answered. ‘This is a friend of mine, Maddy Carr.’

    ‘And yet I see you still got all your clothes on, Maxwell. Are you OK, Maddy? Did Maxwell here hurt you?’

    ‘Nah, I did it myself,’ she said without looking up.
