One lovely evening, a young princess put on her hat and clogs and went for a stroll alone in the woods; and when she got to a cold spring of water with a rose in the midst of it, she sat down to relax for a bit. She now had a golden ball in her hand, her favorite toy, and she was constantly throwing it into the air and catching it as it landed.
After a while, she threw it so high that she missed catching it as it landed, and the ball bounced away and rolled around the ground until it eventually went into the spring. After her ball, the princess gazed into the spring, but it was so deep that she couldn't see the bottom. 'Alas! If I could only have my ball back, I would sacrifice all my wonderful clothing, diamonds, and all I have in the world,' she sobbed.
During her speech, a frog poked its head out of the water and said, 'Princess, why do you cry so bitterly?'
'Alas! What can you do for me, you horrible frog?' she said. My golden ball landed in the spring.'
'I do not want your pearls, jewelry, or good clothing, but if you would love me and let me live with you and eat from your golden plate and sleep on your bed, I will bring you your ball back,' replied the frog.
'What nonsense,' the princess thought, 'this dumb frog is talking!' He couldn't even get out of the spring to see me, but he may be able to grab my ball for me, so I'll tell him he can have everything he wants.'
So she told the frog, 'Well if you bring me my ball, I will do anything you want.'
The frog then lowered his head and dove deep under the water, emerging a short time later with the ball in his jaws and tossing it over the side of the spring.

When the little princess spotted her ball, she hurried to pick it up, and she was so happy to have it back in her hands that she forgot about the frog and raced home as quickly as she could.
'Stay, princess, and take me with you as you requested,' the frog shouted after her.
But she didn't pause to listen.
The next day, as the princess sat down to dinner, she heard a weird noise - tap, tap - plash, plash - as if something was coming up the marble stair, and soon after, there was a gentle knock at the door, and a little voice cried out, 'Open the door, my princess dear, open the door to thy true love here!'
And remember what we talked about by the fountain cool, in the greenwood shade.'
The princess rushed to the door and opened it, where she discovered the frog, whom she had completely
