    And I Will Bless Them - Roy Godwin

    Session 1

    The God Who Blesses

    Gather with your group for your first session. When everyone is introduced and comfortable, work through the material below. Go slowly and reflectively. Honour each other’s comments. Watch the video at the recommended point, then continue working through the questions together.

    Scripture

    The LORD said to Moses, ‘Tell Aaron and his sons, "This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

    ‘"‘The LORD bless you

    and keep you;

    the LORD make his face shine on you

    and be gracious to you;

    the LORD turn his face towards you and give you peace.’"

    ‘So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.’ (Num. 6:22–27)

    Prayer

    Individual: If you’re reading this alone, sing or reflect on the well-known hymn below. As you hear these perhaps familiar words, you could close your eyes and savour what they tell us about the work of God amongst us.

    Group: If you’re reading this as part of a group, the words below could be read slowly by one person or they could be sung together if the group knows the hymn well. The best way is for four people to be given a verse each—this will bring variety in delivery. As you hear these perhaps familiar words, you could close your eyes and savour what they tell us about the work of God amongst us.

    Love divine, all loves excelling,

    joy of heaven, to earth come down,

    fix in us thy humble dwelling,

    all thy faithful mercies crown.

    Jesus, thou art all compassion,

    pure, unbounded love thou art.

    Visit us with thy salvation;

    enter every trembling heart.

    Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit

    into every troubled breast.

    Let us all in thee inherit;

    let us find the promised rest.

    Take away the love of sinning;

    Alpha and Omega be.

    End of faith, as its beginning,

    set our hearts at liberty.

    Come, Almighty, to deliver,

    let us all thy life receive.

    Suddenly return, and never,

    nevermore thy temples leave.

    Thee we would be always blessing,

    serve thee as thy hosts above,

    pray and praise thee without ceasing,

    glory in thy perfect love.

    Finish, then, thy new creation;

    pure and spotless let us be.

    Let us see thy great salvation

    perfectly restored in thee.

    Changed from glory into glory,

    till in heaven we take our place,

    till we cast our crowns before thee,

    lost in wonder, love and praise.

    Suggested statement from the group leader: ‘Today, we will examine the foundations of why we are called to be a people of blessing and how this is rooted in the character and the will of God. Roy Godwin has some teaching that will help us reflect on
