How to Stop Procrastinating - Chase Hill

    INTRODUCTION

Procrastinators face significant challenges when it comes to meeting deadlines, often leading to a lack of productivity and dissatisfaction with crucial aspects of their lives. If you find yourself in this situation, I understand how you might be feeling now.

Nobody desires to be unproductive, and if someone isn't accomplishing as much as they aspire to, it's usually due to procrastination. What's intriguing about procrastinators is that they are typically aware of their tendencies. The fact that you are reading this clearly indicates that you're interested in addressing this issue.

Believe me, deciding to take action is the initial step towards conquering procrastination. If you take some time to contemplate the concept of procrastination, you'll recognize its profound impact on your overall productivity.

Imagine you've been assigned a project with a deadline. Completing it before the due date could lead to the opportunity for more projects and potentially greater earnings. Your potential income is directly linked to your level of productivity. While it may seem straightforward to say that increasing productivity is the solution, it doesn't have to be an impossible challenge.

It's important to emphasize that productivity doesn't equate to working around the clock. I'm certainly not advocating for continuous work. It's about making the best use of the available time.

For instance, if you've been given a week to finish a project, it's essential to use that time efficiently. Instead, you might find yourself wasting precious hours scrolling through social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Social media poses a significant distraction for anyone, particularly for procrastinators. The seemingly harmless phrase, I'll just check, can easily transform a five-minute break into hours of lost productivity. One hour at the computer can quickly become a 50-50 split between work and aimless browsing, which can be rather ironic.

Moreover, this distraction might not even be intentional, and you might not realize you're squandering time until you pause and reflect on it.

Procrastination is a more pernicious issue than many of us acknowledge. Nonetheless, there are always solutions to every problem, including procrastination. With determination and diligence, you can implement practical strategies to overcome it.

There's no debate whether procrastination undermines your productivity; it unequivocally does. For instance, if you could complete 90% of a task in a day but succumb to procrastination, you'll likely achieve only 45%, leaving you significantly underproductive. As the deadline looms closer, you may find yourself in a mad rush to meet your goal, which can compromise the quality of your work.

However, I'd like to share an interesting observation: some individuals can produce high-quality work in a short time due to procrastination. Yes, such people exist, and we'll delve into their habits in this guide. If you're not content with being drawn into procrastination and aspire to boost your productivity, this book will prove immensely beneficial.

How to Stop Procrastinating will empower you to allocate time to the activities that truly matter. This book is your guide to conquering procrastination and working more efficiently.

    Happy and productive reading!

CHAPTER 1: WHY YOU PROCRASTINATE. IDENTIFY YOUR ENEMY AND REASONS FOR SELF-SABOTAGE

Not everyone manages to complete their work on time. While some individuals consistently meet their deadlines — and we certainly need such people — our focus here is on those who struggle to do so. We're discussing those who frequently miss their task deadlines and regularly procrastinate.

You’ve already discovered that you are procrastinating and now, you are looking for ways to overcome the problem. This is something great! A decision has been made.

If you are someone who hasn’t yet understood the fact that you are delaying your work, then, it’s something serious. But you are here because you have understood it. Now, let’s discuss the concept of procrastination in-depth.

Why do you procrastinate? Is it because you aren’t motivated or is it because you are bored with that particular work? Sometimes, procrastination is directly related to your mentality. And other times, it has nothing to do with your behavior, but your mood. Likewise, there are different reasons for procrastination. We’ll be discussing all the reasons that make an individual procrastinate.

Unfortunately, it takes some time and knowledge for the procrastinator to understand why it is so hard to focus on something and get things done in the specified time.

The most straightforward answer is that you recognize what needs to be done, but you're not prepared to do it. This often stems from not fully understanding the value of time. It's become a habit to wait until the last minute to complete tasks. And, if luck is on your side, you might even manage to finish the work just in the nick of time.

Regarding the individuals I mentioned in the introduction, they often complete tasks at the last minute. This approach gives them confidence. As a result, they've developed a habit of delaying work and finishing it right at the deadline.

So, what are the consequences of this behavior? The quality of the work might be jeopardized. But some people don’t allow the quality to be affected, and such people face other consequences.

For example, let’s consider that you have taken a project that has to be completed in two days. But you wasted a day and are only left with one more day. Within that day, you would have to complete the whole project. So, in such a situation you’d have to delay all other scheduled tasks. Going out with your family or friends might get canceled or delayed. Even though canceling plans with friends and family might not affect your project, it will definitely affect your mood.

As you can see, not adhering to deadlines affects not only the quality of the work but also your personal life. You'll struggle to manage your day-to-day activities if you don’t complete tasks on time.

Procrastination is generally viewed as unhealthy, and it's hard to see it in a positive light. Even if you are a pro at getting things done at the last moment, you will still have to face the consequences. Many assume procrastination is okay because they somehow get the work done without compromising the quality. Well, that’s not the case. Even if you are getting the job done, there are many problems you have to deal with when you delay action. Hence, procrastination shouldn’t be categorized as something healthy.

That said, now let’s talk about the next group of people. They are the ones who deal with anxiety and panic due to procrastination. Even though you know you are procrastinating, you can’t stop yourself from doing it. That’s because you have not felt the problem yet. Maybe you haven’t lost a huge project due to procrastination yet.

Many procrastinators I meet tend to say they procrastinate because they are lazy, disorganized, or don’t even care that they are delaying. They know what’s stopping them from being productive, but they still don’t fix what stops them.

Does that make sense? If you know the activity that stops you from reaching your goal, logically you must stop doing that activity. Instead, you keep doing it, and in the end, you lose out.

However, most procrastinators are wise, and they are hardworking individuals. They are capable of doing their work, but they don’t do it on time. And not doing work on time is a huge problem.

Okay, now you are wondering whether you fall into the first category or second, am I right? Regardless of the type, you have to worry about the reasons why you are procrastinating. What if I provide a few questions and you just try answering them? Once you have found the answers, you will be able to find the reason. Or maybe you’ll get a clear understanding of your behavior. Let’s go:

Q1. Once you get a project, do you start thinking negatively about it?

Negative thinking is one of the reasons that cause you to delay the project that you must do. When negativity invades, you start questioning your abilities and skills.

You think that you have too much to do and there’s so much to research, and you believe you should start it when you are in a good mood. Sometimes, that good mood never comes and eventually, you end up delaying the project till the last minute.

Whenever you get a project, you must believe you can do it. You must consider every new project as a challenge. You also need to love the work you do. If you like it, procrastination can be controlled.

Q2. If you fail, what impact will it have on your reputation?

As I said, some people procrastinate
