    Chapter 1

    Greenville, North Carolina, Fall of 1961

    Jane didn’t know what to expect when she went to the dance social with her brother, Fred. During the fall, her small liberal arts college in North Carolina became desegregated and fourteen black students attended the college. She’d never seen a black person on campus, but she’d heard what others had said about them. In the prior week, the biggest rumor on campus was that the college was allowing blacks to attend the social. Of course the campus was in uproar, but she wasn’t bothered by the idea.

    Personally she never had a problem with black people and she didn’t understand why there was so much aggression about her school being desegregated. In her mind, blacks were still humans, and should be treated with the same respect that she would want to be treated with. Well, that is how she interpreted her teachings as a child. Her brother must have learned something different as his thoughts on blacks aligned with most of the white population in the south.

    She wished her brother shared the same wisdom. He thought that all black people were some sort of plague that was infecting everything that was right about America. Every time he’d see a black person on TV or heard one on the radio he’d make a horrible racist comment.

    It sickened her, but she never had the courage to stand up to him. He played football at the college and was an incredible athlete. Unlike
