What is Love? Part 2 - Remy Marie

    What is Love (Part 4)

This is the fourth time I’ve asked this question,

But it still feels like the first.

They say you never forget your first time,

I surely haven’t forgotten about mine.

    I thought I knew love.

    I thought I understood it.

    I thought I felt it.

    I was wrong.

    Love is a mystery.

Once you think you understand it,

It changes right before your eyes.

So perhaps, I must reexamine it.

What is Love is my cold case.

I’m cutting the red tape and reevaluating the evidence,

I hope to solve the question, What is Love by the end of this collection.

    If I don’t, it’s okay.

Perhaps in the end, there is no definitive answer.

Or perhaps love is just a simple answer shared between a group of individuals.

    I honestly don’t know,

    But isn’t that life?

    Life itself is a mystery,

    Shouldn’t love be as well?

    Time, Setting, and Place

    The year is 1973,

    Richard Nixon is president,

And The War in Vietnam is drawing to a close.

It has been nine years since the Civil Rights Act was passed,

It has been six years since Loving versus Virginia,

It has been three years since the local schools desegregated.

But you wouldn’t know it if you’d lived here,

We live in a small North Carolina town named Hayville.

    There’s more cows than people,

    Crops are our main export,

    Despair is our main import.

    This small town is backwards,

It’s still living in the past,

    Racism is alive and well,

Blacks live on one side of the railroad,

    Whites live on the other.

When I was twelve I saw a black man get lynched,

When I was sixteen I saw a black man get beat until he couldn’t stand,

When I was twenty-one, I saw a black man I couldn’t take my eyes off of.

This is the time, setting and place of my story,

This is when I experienced heartache,

This is where I learned to love,

This is what made me strong,

This is who took my virginity,

This is how I became a woman.

    This is my story.

    This is his story.

    This is our story.

    Shall we begin?

    Malik

    His name is Malik

    He is tall, and strong.

His muscles glisten in the sun while he works in the field.

They bulge with every movement as he tosses hay bales with ease.

I’ve never felt such a strong attraction before.

    It swept me by surprise.

    I knew I shouldn’t like what I felt,

    but there was no
