A Dromedary at the North Pole - A.P. Hernández
CHAPTER 1
This is a story about Sonny, a very special dromedary.
What’s a dromedary, you ask?
Well, it’s a good question because many people confuse dromedaries with camels. It’s true. They do look quite similar. But there’s a very noticeable difference between the two animals.
Dromedaries have one hump while camels have two.
There you go.
It’s as simple as that.
And, if you’re still not sure, here are a couple of pictures.
This beautiful animal is a dromedary.
While this one’s a camel.
Anyway, as I was saying, Sonny’s a dromedary and, like all dromedaries, he has a hump.
Humps are super useful for dromedaries because they can store a lot of fat. If they’re walking through the desert and get thirsty, dromedaries can turn this fat into water. Isn’t that amazing?
But Sonny doesn’t live in the desert.
Sonny lives at the North Pole, and it’s very cold there.
Right now, Sonny’s shivering.
The wind is glacial and everything around him is white. Sonny looks to his right, to his left, forward, and backward. He’s looking for a place to shelter from the cold, but there’s nothing around.
There’s absolutely zilch at the North Pole. Only ice and snow.
Sonny’s teeth begin to chatter. He’s shaking all over, even down to his toes. He can barely keep upright.
I need to protect myself from the wind, he thinks. I can’t stay here much longer.
So he starts walking.
