About this ebook

You might never build another snowman again!

If you have ever cast an uncomfortable glance over your shoulder when passing the silent snowy sentinels that stand looking at you as you pass on the icy sidewalk, if you've ever questioned what might really happen if the old silk hat placed on Frosty the Snowman's head was truly magic, then these two dark humor snowman tales by Mark Leslie are for you.

THAT OLD SILK HAT THEY FOUND
Why does that classic song always portray a jolly, happy snowman dancing around and celebrating life? What if, once the kids placed that old silk hat on Frosty's head, it wasn't quite the magical experience?

IDES OF MARCH
In the middle of March a middle-aged man frustrated with the benign activity of filling out his annual tax forms is confronted with a bizarre event - two hulking creatures appear in a pick up truck and are intent on kidnapping the snowman from the front yard.

This eBook contains two short stories, author's notes about the writing of the stories, a look at anthropomorphic snow sculptures in history and popular culture, as well as the history of this digital chapbook.

Total word count is about 7500 words. The stories themselves can be read on a quick coffee break.

Snowman Shivers:Two Dark Humor Tales About Snowmen - Mark Leslie

    DEDICATION

For Alexander, my son, who brings back the joy, wonder, and thrill of having fun in the snow.

    IT SNOWED LAST NIGHT

    A Note from the Author

I’ll BE ENTIRELY honest here; when I was little, I had never been particularly frightened of snowmen.

I’m not sure why. Because my whole life I’ve been afraid of the monster under my bed, the one hiding in my closet and all the ghosts and ghouls that I know lurk within the shadows wherever I roam around after dark.

But snowman never really gave me the creeps.

Despite the fact that, when you think about them, snowmen can be rather scary. I mean, look at how they are constructed. What kind of a life is that?

A body made of three balls of packed snow piled atop one another? A pair of broken tree branch sticks for arms.

Not to mention those dark black eyes of coal.

But even though I’ve never been frightened of snowmen I’ve written about them – and seem to have been fascinated with the basic idea of a snowman actually coming to life, like in the classic Christmas carol that children joyfully sing each year; but in my imagination it’s not always quite as joyful and magical an experience as in the song.

Perhaps my fascination with snowmen comes from growing up in a more northerly part of Canada (I grew up in Levack, a small town about an hour’s drive north of Sudbury, Ontario – and we had REAL winters there, not the pseudo winters that I now experience in Southern Ontario. Winters up north were long; the snow was plentiful. I truly enjoyed cavorting in the snow for afternoons and evenings after school that seemed to last forever.

When I was young, snowmen were just a part of the natural winter wonderland snowscape I cherished.

Now, though, I tend to throw a cautious glance over my shoulder whenever I pass once, particularly when walking down a dark, deserted street . . .
