About this ebook

Pumi is a very special cat. Unlike his brothers, who enjoy hunting, scratching sofas and racing, Pumi likes to watch the stars, ask questions and, above all, doing justice. He wants to become a police dog when he grows, and that is why he asks Moe the library mouse to help him learn how to read and write.

But things aren’t as easy as they seem. Trying to enter the police force, Pumi finds himself in a world ruled by dogs and prejudice, a world where cats, no matter how brave they are, have no place. The obstacles in his way will test his determination, strength and perseverance, while they will help him meet new friends and live great adventures.

Book recommended for children and preteen between 6-7 and 10-11 years old.

Due to the central role that felines have in this book, I would be utterly disrespectful if I did not dedicate this to Pumi, my cat, who has fed my imagination and inspired this story through his years by my side.

    CHAPTER 1

    Black, white and brown

It was midnight, and Mary, a 60 years old lady, watched the newly born litter of kittens that had just arrived into the world. Snow, her cat, had been in labor most of the evening, and now she was laying on her comfortable cushion, giving warmth and milk to her nine children. Meanwhile Lyon, the father of the infants, licked them their first bath of their lives.

Snow was white as snow, and Lyon black as coal. How do you think their children looked like? White? Black? Black and white? Grey?

Well, you will be surprised to find out that there were all kind of colors. A kitten was black, just like his father. Another two were as white as their mother. Three were white with black patches. Two were black with white patches. And the last one was white and... Brown! Yes, yes, you heard me. His back had brown hair, and one could see that he was going to be a very large and strong cat by the way he drank milk from her mother’s nipple. He had been at it for five minutes already, and he didn’t stop drinking. He might be really thirsty, or the milk might be really tasty and warm. You must understand that this is all my imagination, since (I promise) I have never tasted cat milk, only cow and goat milk.

If you are thinking that this last cat was an intruder, that he wasn’t one of Snow and Lyon’s children, that he had crashed the party just to gorge on milk, I can guarantee you that he wasn’t. If you don’t trust me, you can ask Mary. She saw it all. She was there all evening, watching as Snow delivered, one after the other, all those nine precious kittens.

And, talking about Mary, she was watching the scene from her rocking chair. She bore a slight smile on her face and her eyes twinkled with excitement in the half-light. Mary
