The three of us had been planning this trip for months.  We were pretty excited to almost be there.  We were looking forward to a week’s worth of relaxing on the beach.

Rachel was my best friend.  We’d known each other pretty much our entire lives.  She and I had gone to the same school since, well, we’d started school.  The small district covered two small towns.  We hung out with the same neighborhood kids.  These were the same kids we went to preschool with.  Everyone knew everyone.  We all rode our bikes around town, wandered the ATV trails through the woods, and chilled at the picnic table in front of the corner store.

Sometime in middle school, around 7th or 8th grade, Rachel and I found ourselves biking home up the same street together.  We bonded over our parents’ record collections.  We’ve been best friends since. 

We had our first drinks together at secret outdoor parties in high school, drove the next town over for movies and pizza, and did whatever else teenagers do to pass the time in rural places.  We were always together, especially when it mattered most.  We helped each other through the grief of losing grandparents to old age and through the trials of growing up in less-than-ideal households.  Rachel was the sister I never knew I wanted. 

She had a thoughtful manner and a vicious sense of humor.  Those paired well with my cynical and often selfish nature.
