Naughty or Nice - Ireland Lorelei

    NOTE TO READERS

The characters in this book are unapologetic and dramatic. The scenes are steamy and the road to happily ever after maybe twisted. This book is mean for audiences 18 years old and older. A list of potential triggering themes can be found on my website at www.irelandlorelei.com.

    Prologue

    Kari

    Three years ago…

I pull up to my parents’ house in upstate New York on December twenty-second to spend Christmas and New Year’s with my family. I am praying my mom doesn’t start with the boyfriend talk. She seems to think that I need a man in my life no matter how many times I tell her that I don’t need one right now. It is okay to be single and focus on building my career.

Mom, I am twenty-five years old, just finished college a year ago. I am in the first year of my career. I DON’T NEED A MAN, I yell at my mom.

Kari don’t yell at your mother like that, Dad says in that military tone that scares me. You would think the man was still in the Marine Corps, but he has been retired for five years now.

    Yes, Sir, I reply.

Sweetie, I just want you to be happy. You didn’t date all through college. I want you to find balance in your life. Don’t work all the time and not find someone to share your life with, Mom says to me.

I know Mom, but right now is just not the right time, I tell her.

Well, Sally’s son is in town. You remember Ethan, right? You guys went to school together. They live down the street. He went to Harvard and just got a job at a law firm in the city. They are coming to have dinner with us on the twenty-third. You two should hit if off, Mom says.

Really Mom. You cannot be serious right now! One, yes, I remember Ethan, he was a few years older than me. Two, we didn’t associate in the same circles. We weren’t even friends. Dad, please do something! I begged.

Ellie, leave her alone. She will settle down when she is ready, Dad told Mom.

Charles, I am not trying to get her to settle down, but to at least put herself on the market, my mom told him.

I rolled my eyes and said, I am going into town. I will be back later. And I walked out the house.

It is the 23rd and sure enough, Sally and Ethan show up for dinner. I put on a smile to be nice, but I was not feeling it at all. My brother and his wife and two-year-old daughter came in early this morning.

We are sitting at the dinner table and Kevin, my brother, is sitting across from me. He keeps kicking me under the table laughing at me and I keep rolling my eyes at him. Kevin is two years older than me, and we are really close. He has always been very protective even to the point of getting on board with me against mom and her always trying to set me up.

After dinner, my mother pushed us all on a walk around the neighborhood caroling.

By the end of the night, I had realized, that while I didn’t want to date Ethan, he was an interesting guy. We could even become good friends. But that was it. I wasn’t interested in him, and he wasn’t interested in me. We were not each other’s types.

    Chapter One

    Kari

    The Present…

It is a cold, snowy Friday evening, two weeks before Thanksgiving. I am sitting in my recliner watching, This Christmas, on TV while drinking some hot chocolate as the fireplace crackles heating up the room.

My cell phone rings. I start to not even look at it, because I am not in the mood to talk. I just want to relax. But I pick it up anyway and my parents number comes up. Now I really don’t want to answer because I know what the conversation with my mom is going to be. But on the chance that something is wrong, I pause the movie and answer.

    Hello, I said.

Kari, are you coming home for Thanksgiving this year? Mom asked into the phone.

    "Well, hello to
