The Creative Genius - Melinda Dean

Mental health is becoming increasingly important

People in today's culture are becoming more conscious of the impact that one's mental health can have on their overall well-being, which is one reason why mental health is gaining more and more importance. The World Health Organization (WHO) gives the following definition of mental health: a state of well-being in which every individual realizes their own potential, is able to cope with the typical stresses of life, is able to work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community. Nevertheless, despite efforts to increase awareness of mental health, stigmatization and prejudice frequently remain, which results in a failure to meet the mental health needs of individuals. Problems with one's mental health can strike anyone, regardless of their socioeconomic standing, cultural background, age, or gender. As a result, it is imperative to address mental health in a holistic approach that takes into account not only psychological concerns, but also factors related to society, the environment, and the economy. When it comes to mental health services, a shortage of resources frequently results in a delay in diagnosis and treatment, which in turn has unfavorable repercussions not just for the individual but also for their families. Therefore, there is a need to improve mental health services and make them widely available, inclusive, and cheap to a greater number of people so that more people may receive the appropriate treatment and support they require. There are a variety of alternative methods that, in addition to expanding access to traditional mental health services, can be of assistance in the process of bettering one's mental health.

One of these methods is through creative expression. Individuals are afforded the opportunity to express themselves in ways that might not be available in other contexts. As a result, creativity provides an emotional outlet that can assist in the alleviation of stress and anxiety. Studies have indicated that individuals who participate in creative activities have an overall improvement in their mental health. This improvement includes an increase in self-esteem, a decrease in depressive symptoms, and an improved capacity to cope with bad situations. In addition, research has shown that engaging in creative activities can assist individuals in processing and expressing traumatic events, which in turn enables them to move on from those experiences. In a similar vein, engaging in artistic pursuits can provide individuals with a sense of success by assisting them in the acquisition of new talents and pushing them to their personal limits. This sense of accomplishment not only increases one's self-esteem but also encourages the development of a more optimistic attitude on life and contributes to the general improvement of one's mental health.

Therefore, using creative expression as a treatment modality or a form of self-care can make a major contribution to improving overall mental health outcomes. In addition, studies have shown that engaging in creative activities can assist lower levels of stress and anxiety. The process of creating provides a meditative state that enables individuals to move their concentration away from their concerns and, as a result, can help minimize depression symptoms in those who are affected by the condition. Similarly, engaging in creative activities has been found to have a good influence on the brain's response to stressful stimuli, lowering the levels of cortisol in the body and, as a result, lowering the levels of stress experienced by the individual. Creative activities, such as painting, drawing, writing, or playing an instrument, have the potential to enhance neurological pathways that contribute to emotional regulation. This, in turn, results in increased resilience and a reduction in negative emotions. The potential of creativity to foster social relationships and alleviate feelings of social isolation is another important advantage of engaging in creative endeavors. Participating in artistic endeavors, such as taking part in community painting classes, becoming a member of a writing club, or attending musical events, can provide opportunities to interact with individuals who share similar interests and to form bonds over these shared passions. This can result in the establishment of stronger social networks, which in turn can help individuals feel more supported and less alone in their struggles. These social relationships have the potential to instill a sense of belonging and lessen feelings of loneliness, both of which are beneficial to an individual's mental health. Maintaining good mental health is becoming more and more important, and engaging in creative activities is an excellent approach to achieve this goal. Not only can incorporating creative activities into traditional mental health therapies and encouraging creative expression among individuals help reduce stress and anxiety levels, but it can also increase one's sense of self-worth and make it easier to regulate one's emotions.

Creativity should not be used in place of traditional mental health services; instead, it can be used as a complimentary strategy that addresses the many aspects of mental health and welfare. Therefore, investing in creative programs that individuals can easily access would lead to improved outcomes for mental health, increased general well-being for individuals, and strengthened communities.

Creativity can be a powerful tool

One of the most major benefits of creativity is its capacity to channel feelings and ideas that are difficult to express or process via traditional ways. This is one of the most significant advantages of creativity. When we devote our time and energy to artistic endeavors, we frequently investigate subjects that we might not necessarily feel at ease discussing with other people. We are able to process and work through difficult feelings and ideas that, if we did not have an outlet for creative expression, might otherwise remain repressed or unresolved. This is especially true for those who deal with mental health illnesses such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as these individuals may find it tough to describe their emotions in a traditional treatment setting. In point of fact, many therapists have begun to include creative exercises as part of their therapy regimens in order to assist their patients in more freely and openly expressing themselves. Research has indicated that individuals can benefit from engaging in creative activities such as painting, drawing, or writing even outside of traditional therapeutic settings, which may help alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression. In this regard, creativity can act as a potent coping technique that enables individuals to investigate and process feelings that may be difficult to express through traditional means. This helps individuals to express themselves in ways that are more authentic to them. Participating in creative pursuits, in addition, has the potential to improve our general psychological well-being. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for emotions of pleasure and reward.

Research has shown that engaging in creative activities such as writing, dancing, or playing an instrument can promote the release of dopamine. This release of dopamine can provide a natural high that can boost our mood and lessen the amounts of stress that we are experiencing. In addition, many artistic pursuits, such as painting or drawing, require persons to be in a state of flow, which is a state of complete immersion in an activity in which time seems to stand still and we become completely involved in the present moment. This condition is necessary for many creative endeavors. It has been established that being in this state of flow has multiple positive effects on mental health, including enhanced focus, decreased stress levels, and improved mental clarity. Individuals are able to make time for themselves and participate in things that bring them happiness when they engage in creative pursuits, which can also serve as a form of self-care.

When we have busy schedules and lots of work to do, it's tempting to put our own requirements on the back burner in favor of satisfying the requirements of those around us. However, engaging in creative pursuits on a consistent basis can serve as a helpful reminder to prioritize the requirements of our own self-care. When we make the effort to participate in pursuits that bring us pleasure, we communicate to our own minds that the maintenance of our mental health is on par with the completion of our work or the
