Introduction
President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) is a very thoughtful person. He is a great leader. Therefore, there is quite a lot to learn from him as a political and business icon.
The man has gone through hell at the hands of the former government of Zambia. He has shown the entire world that even a regime that is more dictatorial than democratic can be erased out of power with the ballot.
Besides that, he is a great person from whom a lot needs to be learnt. His life is a fulltime lesson. Learning from him is the essence of this book.
1.HH’s Perseverance
One of the greatest strengths of President Hakainde Hichilema is his perseverance. It is indeed unmatched. One can imagine blood-thirsty politically-biassed police employed on ethnic grounds, effectively ruling party cadres in police uniform violently breaking into HH’s mansion. They beat up staff before storming his luxurious house.
The militia police look everywhere for him. They understand he is in a fortified room which they cannot break into. The ruling party cadres in police uniform teargas the room and excitedly do whatever they please. Then they leave. That action alone could have made some fainthearted individuals quit politics and concentrate on their businesses.
Alas, the determined man persevered. He was apprehended by heavily armed police the following day. That apprehension was effectively like a warfront against a powerful nation. It was the climax of the little battles the state had plotted against the innocent honest man whose mission was just to liberate the country from regionalization, polarisation, widening ethnic gaps, economic malaise, corruption, violence and extralegal killings.
The man stood firm as they took him to Lilayi Police Training Institute where he was charged with trumped up treason, thereby shocking the entire world. Contriving treason out of a plotted traffic offence incident was the climax of the war to kick the man out of prospective presidential races. But, did it work out? It could only be practicable had they been dealing with a person who lacked perseverance.
What the oppressive government failed to understand was that wax and clay could be exposed to sunlight. Wax would melt easily. The same sun would harden clay! That was the point the oppressors missed. Apprehending HH in a humiliating manner in fact fortified his resolve to get to the helm of power. To the weak-minded cohorts, it was game-over for HH ; thinking he would never contest any future election ; fearing thuggery and detention. However, the police brutality did nothing to his political and economic vision.
They exponentially engaged brutality gears against the innocent opposition leader because the previous police summons and unlawful detentions had not crushed his ambition of liberating the country economically. Hence the seizure that led to his detention in a cell for eight days without electricity, water and a toilet. He could see no one either, until a court ruled that he be moved to an ordinary prison. Despite the torture, HH did not give up on his dream. What perseverance! What a lesson to you dear reader!
We have seen people quit for trivial reasons. If you are that kind of person, dear reader, you had better take a leaf from President Hichilema who epitomises winners as non-quitters. The man knew that it would be darkest before dawn indeed! For sure, that was how events unfolded.
In that hell of a prison, he spent long tormenting hours, days, weeks and months. The oppressor was convinced that the showdown would indeed squeeze all the remnants of resistance out of the selfless rich man who had absolutely nothing to lose individually even if he resultantly quit politics.
A debate rocked the country due to the inhumane treatment of an honest individual just because of his political ambition. Certainly, the oppressor desired to ensure that the United Party for National Development (UPND) ‘died a natural death’ by the consistent unlawful locking up of the party president. Conversely, after the miserable hundred and twenty-seven days’ detention,HH declared that he had grown ten times stronger!
Therefore, if you are to be successful in any endeavor, there is a lesson here that perseverance must be an ingredient of your efforts. You could choose to be a quitter. Nevertheless, consequences of quitting are devastating. For example, if you looked at why some people committed suicide, you would surely find
