A failure of democracy

The military coup in Mali this week and the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe must be the evidence we need not to undermine what Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said in his veiled warning to the ANC and government.

This is also proof that, whether we agree with religion or not, religious leaders are influential in society and we undermine their views at our own peril.

In an outburst after government denied the Dalai Lama a visa a few years ago, Tutu issued a veiled threat to the ANC government that he and others would pray for its demise.
