    Par Pass - Rosario Stefanelli

    Single Act

    Characters

    Matilde

    Rodolfo, husband of Matilde

    Inspector in charge

    Angelica, secretary

    Gregorio, widower

Office of the Family Inspectorate. In the office there is a large desk full of paperwork. In front of the work table there are two chairs to welcome guests. On the left-hand side there is a filing cabinet and on the right-hand side there is a not-so-large window. It is a place where you can taste the old. A bit claustrophobic. A woman, about forty-five, energetically opens the door and lets a couple, Rodolfo and Matilde, into the room. The man in the suit and tie is in his forties. She, in a blue skirt and white blouse, is in her mid-thirties .

ANGELICA The inspector in charge is about to arrive. Have a seat

    MATILDE thank you

The two sit down. Matilde does not occupy the whole chair, while Rodolfo sits almost on the tip of the bench.

RODOLFO we would have an appointment at 3 p.m.

ANGELICA the inspector in charge is entering the complex at this moment and will certainly apologize for the three minute delay.

The man looks at his watch, while the secretary goes to the archive to take out a file.

RODOLFO and already there are four and soon five

The secretary continues to search as if nothing had happened.

MATILDE dear please. Don't be anxious

RODOLFO I have an important engagement today

MATILDE this one is too. In fact more than that. You could have also freed yourself

RODOLFO damn it, I'll be late!

MATILDE calm down. We'll hurry up, you'll see.

    RODOLFO and it's six minutes

MATILDE but what anxiety. But what is it? Giovanna's replacement?

    RODOLFO it's not work

MATILDE and what is it about?

    RODOLFO then I'll tell you.

MATILDE poor thing! I wonder about her husband.

    RODOLFO who knows?

    MATILDE Did you know him?

    RODOLFO no

MATILDE She'll be hard to replace. She was the best assistant you ever had

    RODOLFO oh yes

    MATILDE and this other engagement?

RODOLFO again! I told you we'll talk about it at home.

    MATILDE all right, all right.

RODOLFO I only hope that this inspector won't go on any longer.

    The secretary closes the file

ANGELICA if you want, I'll make a phone call, to find out if he is inside the complex

    RODOLFO all right, call.

MATILDE leave it alone, thanks. We are not in a hurry

ANGELICA OK. I confirm that he'll be here in a few minutes

Matilde, the wife, gives her husband a hard look

    ANGELICA Excuse me

    MATILDE thanks

Angelica exits closing the door energetically

RODOLFO I don't understand you. For people like us it should be a formality. And instead we go through the rigmarole like those who will never get a driving licence.

MATILDE On the other hand, I don't understand how you can think of other commitments, when we could soon...

RODOLFO We should have already, Matilde. We should have already. But instead. I think they were right to enact that law. But I don't think it's right to herd everyone

    MATILDE how can you say...

RODOLFO I know, I know. Political correctness cannot admit that there are A and Z series citizens. But it's absurd... don't you find it absurd?

    MATILDE I don't know.

RODOLFO Speaking of z citizens, has your brother been in touch again?

MATILDE I haven't heard from him anymore

    RODOLFO fortunately

MATILDE I was inflexible last time.

RODOLFO and the rest of the crew?
