The Hoofers 2 – Jennifer and The Man

The week in Cancun following the successful bust at the Bright Light had been worth it, I felt a lot better than I had at the end of that case. Still, walking toward the third floor conference room I couldn’t help noticing the usual crowd of Special Agents around the water cooler at the other end of the corridor.

It wasn’t always the same ones but they were always the same type; a group, four or five of them, all middle-aged, usually balding and ranging from slightly to grossly overweight. Not the most edifying representations of manhood. They were watching me, trying to be covert about it, but watching me nonetheless.

The reason for their interest became clear as soon as I drew level with the conference room door. The tacky A4 picture this time was printed rather than handwritten. The garish yellow picture of a Pokémon character sat in the middle of some lettering, and was a joke that had gone the round on Facebook some months earlier. I’ll Pikachu in the shower wasn’t as funny as it had been. I smiled and reached into my bag, pulling out a latex glove and pulling it over my long fingers before removing the joke from the door. Careful not to touch it with my unshielded hand, I walked slowly up the corridor toward them, a broad grin on my face. The five of them stood their ground and watched, waiting for my next move.

Thank you, gentlemen. I’m glad one of you decided you didn’t want to draw your pension after all.

I could see the looks of confusion on their faces.

The high mandarins have decided we need to go green. Now any piece of unnecessary paperwork can be traced back to its originating PC. There’s a tiny, faint watermark printed each time. Since we’ve now been assigned our own CSI, I’m quite sure he can trace both the originator’s printer and of course dust this for prints. I’m sure you’ll be hearing from Internal fairly soon.

With that I turned, leaving their stunned faces behind me
