About this ebook

Newly married Gideon and Rebecca are driving through the mountains to a honeymoon resort. An unexpected early summer snowstorm strands them in a full hotel. They are forced to share a room with a black trucker or sleep in the lobby.
With nothing to do, the trucker suggests they celebrate their new marriage at the bar and buys all the booze.
With both Gideon and Rebecca smashed, Gideon makes a stupid decision that results in Becca ending up in the trucker’s arms for the honeymoon night. Can they recover from this disaster?

    Snowed In

    Chapter 1

Standing at the altar Friday night, I watched my bride, escorted by her father, wend her way up the aisle, waving to the guests. Two little flower girls threw petals on the carpet, followed by her bridesmaids, then her. Her train was carried by her Maid of Honour. The bride was a gorgeous spectacle, her blue-eyed blondness stealing my breath away; she was so beautiful. I pinched myself hard just in case this was a dream.

Then I pinched my friend and best man, Mark, busy salivating over the bride. He gave me an irritated look.

She's mine, you dog, I reminded him, smiling.

He gave me his trademark, shit-eating grin. You won't live forever, asshole, he shot back. I promise to console her real good if anything happens. Like maybe a heart attack tonight from getting so lucky!

We shared a good laugh. The sick humour helped relieve the tension of standing in front of dozens of spectators waiting for Rebecca and me to pledge our freedom away.

Ir only that fucking Priest would stop waving the goddamn incense around. It was giving me a headache, making me want to sneeze. I was tempted to let that go right in his face. I'd asked him at our meeting to take it easy as I have allergies, but he was ignoring me. Probably worrying about God sending him to hell if he didn't douse the place enough. At least I knew there were no bugs around. His church stank so badly from the fumes the cockroaches would be fleeing for friendlier digs in the ghetto. I was only putting up with this religious crap because a church wedding was important to Becca.

He got to the point after a long, boring soliloquy about God and his various failures. Things that the church liked to call successes, but any goddamn fool knew weren't. He had us face each other and clasp hands.

"Do you, Gideon, take Rebecca for your lawful wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do you part."

    I do!

"Do you, Rebecca, take Gideon for your lawful husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do you part."

    I do!

"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride!"

And that was it. We went for pictures, had an excellent reception and snuck out for our intended destination at a beachside hotel a few hundred miles away.

The wedding left us broke. We had three weeks off but could only afford a one-week honeymoon and two weeks back at home. Her dad had offered to pay for the wedding, but we wanted it done our way and paid the price. We'd prepaid the honeymoon, so we'd be fine. A fun-filled week of sun, sand, booze and making love to my gorgeous new bride. Then we could hang around town doing anything we wanted.

We got away unscathed; no one had found the car or done anything obnoxious to it.

A few hours into the drive heading through the mountains between us and our destination, snow started drifting down. I was a little worried and hoped it didn't continue. I kicked my ass for not checking the weather before we left. I didn't have snow tires on. It was early summer, and the snow was unexpected. Driving in this kind of weather without the right equipment wasn't too bright.

Becca knew that. I could feel her tensing up as the unseasonable weather continued to deteriorate. The car fishtailed on the slippery road a couple of times. This wasn't looking good; I was getting concerned myself.

Soon the flakes were coming down thicker than door-knocking JWs, engulfing the road while the trees around us stood proudly like white ghosts in the darkness. It was becoming increasingly difficult to see anything, least of all where the road was.

I was actually happy to see some red emergency lights flashing on the road ahead and a brightly lit hotel sign just off to the side.

The trooper blocking the road shone his flashlight at us. The highway is closed, folks; the snow is getting too deep to continue. I have to stop you for the night. I suggest you stay over at the hotel there.

That didn't leave us much choice, and wondering if we had enough money to pay for a room, I pulled in.

The lady at the front desk was sympathetic, but there were no rooms left. I leaned over the counter.

But, ma'am, it's our wedding night. Surely there must be something. A reservation that hasn't shown or...?

Her eyes softened with sorrow. I wish I had something for you. But we are truly filled up. I have nothing.

Would it be okay if we sleep on the sofas in the lobby then? There isn’t any place else to go with the highway closed.

She bit her lip, thinking. Just a sec.

She turned and yelled into the bar, Ray!

A large, black guy sitting on a barstool turned away from watching a game to look. She waved him over.

Give me a minute with him, she requested. She talked to him in a low voice before calling us back.

Okay, folks. This is Raymond. He's a trucker who's been staying here for years when the mountain weather turns bad, like tonight. I know him well. It's just him in the room, and there is a second queen-size bed. If you want to pay half his room cost, he's prepared to share it with you.

I took a good look at him. Tall, heavily muscled, he wore the well-worn fading clothes of a working man, the faint smell of motor oil and diesel surrounding him. He had to be six feet two or three inches tall with hands the size of shovels.

It was a fair offer considering the dire circumstance, and with a quick glance to get Becca's approving nod, we accepted. I handed over the money out of our small contingency pile to cover the cost.

Gideon, I introduced myself holding my hand out, and this is my new wife, Rebecca. We just got married a few hours ago.

    Congratulations! He offered,
