About this ebook

A New Light a New Love

This is a love story; it's a faith story, about Alicia and Anthony, two complete strangers with something in common; a devastating loss. From outward appearances they have worked through their grief and moved on, but those closest to them, know the truth. Their inability to let go of the pain and grief of their past, has prevented them from finding love again.

They have not lived but merely existed in a self-imposed darkness, cutting them off from the joy of life, still very much available to them. The fervent prayers of a loving sister will bring them together, but it's a loving and wise God who will bless them with their happily ever after.

I hope my readers will follow them on their journey as hand in hand they walk out of the darkness into a New Light and a New Love!

Your picture doesn’t do you justice. He said quietly.

For the past two hours, Alicia had been steadily signing books. Her right hand was starting to cramp up, and the pain across the bridge of her nose was slowly creeping down the base of her skull, signaling the onset of a full-blown migraine. She’d opted not to take a break earlier to eat, a decision she now fully regretted. So between her cramping hand, the pain building in her head and the rumbling in her belly, she’d barely noticed when he handed her yet another book to sign. She hadn’t looked up or noticed his hands, but his silky sexy voice assaulted her ears and penetrated the fatigue clouding her brain.

I beg your pardon. She said, finally looking up at the honey-brown face housing a set of haunting brown eyes flecked with gold. As she registered his face, his eyes, and those lips—her heart began to beat a little too fast and she couldn’t remember her name, let alone sign it.

You said something about my picture? She stammered, hoping he didn’t notice the sheen of perspiration that had begun to form on her upper lip. He cocked his head slightly to the side and smiled, showing brilliant-white teeth. Like a deer caught in the headlights, she sat there wondering if it was her empty stomach or his mesmerizing smile, making her feel light-headed. In response to her question he slowly took the book from her hand, turned it to the back cover, and pointed to her picture.

I said, he said, smiling that awesome smile. "Your picture doesn’t do you justice. You’re much prettier in person."

Alicia couldn’t remember the last time she’d blushed, but judging from the intense warmth she could feel spread across her cheeks, she knew she must be beet red. As she scrambled to think of a response to his completely unexpected compliment, he extended his beautifully manicured hand.

Let me introduce myself, he said. Anthony—my name is Anthony Royce.

His hand swallowed hers as she returned his hand shake. She blushed again, and she envisioned all the wonderful things he could probably do with those hands. As if he’d read her mind, he flashed a wicked grin and squeezed her hand before letting it go. The thank you she uttered barely above a whisper seemed insufficient in response to how he’d made her feel, but it was all she could manage.

"My sister bought your book at your last book signing, he said. She told me a little about your story, and I decided I wanted to read it for myself. From what she told me, we have some things in common."

Her raised eyebrows must have conveyed the question she had not verbally expressed. His smile faded briefly, replaced by a hint of sadness.

My wife died five years ago. He said, in a voice thick with emotion.

Alicia’s mouth felt dry, and she struggled to come up with an appropriate response to his very personal revelation. Before she could find comforting words, she noticed the line that had formed behind him. At the look on her face he turned slightly and noticed as well all the people behind him. Turning back to her, he handed her the book again with a sheepish grin.

I guess I need to move on and let you sell some books. He said, flashing that dazzling smile.

With supreme effort, she took her eyes off his handsome face and began to write on the inside cover of her book. Thank you so much for your support. I hope you enjoy the read. Alicia. When she handed the book back to him, his hand grazed hers slightly, setting off an electric shock. She favored him with a smile of her own and looked longingly, as he turned and walked away with her book and his credit card in his hand.

Over the next forty-five minutes, as she signed more books, her mind was preoccupied with thoughts of the handsome stranger. When she finally gathered her things and prepared to leave the bookstore, she wondered wistfully if she’d ever see him again. Alicia needed to make a quick pit stop in the ladies’ room to relieve her bladder and freshen up before leaving. When she emerged from the restroom and headed toward the exit, she received the answer to her question.

I wonder if I’ll see Him Again.

Alicia blinked rapidly at first, not believing her own eyes. It can’t be him, she thought to herself as she moved closer to the exit. Oh my God! she thought, as she got even closer. It is him! He was leaning casually up against the door, looking like a model straight off of a GQ magazine cover. From her vantage point at the table, he’d looked very tall, but now that they were on the same level, she guessed he was about six foot one or two.

He was slim but not skinny. He looked like he worked out, his muscular arms evident through the sleeves of his navy-blue single-breasted blazer. He wore crisply pressed jeans and a starched white collarless shirt. Around his neck he wore a thin gold herringbone chain. He was wearing a pair of soft leather cognac-colored lace-up oxfords. Stealing a quick glance at his feet, she surmised he wore about a size nine or ten shoe. He wore a very expensive-looking gold watch and what looked like some kind of class ring on his right ring finger. He wore his hair cut short and close to his head. She could just barely see a little grey at his temples and in his neatly groomed mustache.

He was absolutely striking. She could feel her cheeks getting warm again, and with each step she took her heart beat faster and her mouth felt dryer.

You look like you need something to eat or a drink, or both. He said when she finally stood before him. He flashed that hypnotizing smile, but his beautiful brown eyes showed genuine concern. Alicia was lost in those beautiful eyes. Her mind raced as she searched for a response to his comment. She still couldn’t believe he was still there, has he been waiting all this time? She thought, to herself.

She took so long to respond to his comment; Anthony feared she was disturbed or even angered by his presence.

Hey look, he said. I’m sorry. I’m not some crazed fan or stalker. It’s just that when I told you my wife died, I saw a look briefly cross your face. Maybe I’m wrong, but I felt a connection, like you immediately understood what I was feeling. It’s one of the things my sister said she thought we had in common. I just wanted to explore that connection. I thought maybe we could go somewhere and talk over a drink?

Alicia studied his face, for a brief second he looked like a small boy seeking permission to stay outside a little longer, and she felt a gentle tug on her heart. She was exhausted, and she had been really looking forward to going home, getting out of her clothes, having a glass of wine, and closing her eyes. But she was hungry, and she had to admit she had felt something, too.

Since she’d written her book she’d talked to a lot of other widows. She’d compared notes and commiserated with dozens of women about the pain and heartache of losing a spouse. She’d talked for hours about the challenges of starting over after long years of marriage, but up till now she’d yet to talk to a widower. She did want to hear about his experience—to know what that loss felt like from a male perspective. Who are you kidding Alicia? She thought, to herself. Admit it; you just can’t get enough of that sexy voice, and those eyes, those beautiful brown eyes! The truth is you just want to spend some more time with this very hot man.

He must have taken the smile that involuntarily crossed her face as encouragement.

Come on, he pleaded. I promise you I’m harmless. Just one drink? He pleaded. She finally found her voice amused by the puppy-dog look on his face.

I’m starved, so I’ll agree to have a drink with you, but you’ll have to feed me first. She said, favoring him with a wicked grin of her own.

Alicia didn’t think his smile could be any more dazzling, but upon hearing her response to his plea, his face lit up like a Christmas tree. She couldn’t help but laugh and feel flattered that he looked like he’d just won the lottery.

There’s a very nice bar and grill not far from here, he said with a satisfied grin. You can order anything you like!

Have You Lost Your Last Mind?

As she walked through the door he held open for her, she searched in her purse for her car keys.

I’m right over here, in this first section. He said.

So am I, she said and pointed her key fob toward her car to unlock the door. She looked up puzzled when Anthony started to chuckle and shake his head.

    What’s so funny? She asked.

In response to her question, he raised his hand and pointed his key fob toward his own car. Following the direction of his hand with her eyes, she saw the lights flash on the car parked right next to hers. Alicia turned slowly toward him, hands on her hips, eyes narrowed, and asked…

Are you sure you’re not a stalker?

Anthony quickly wiped the smile from his face, and raised his hands in mock surrender.

I swear to God, I had no idea that was your car! Damn! He thought, to himself. She probably thinks I’m some kind of creep. Now, I bet she’s gonna change her mind about that drink. Alicia took a few minutes to enjoy his obvious discomfort and then she smiled. Cocking her head to the side, she looked him up and down and then sighed.

I don’t know why, she said. I truly hope I’m not going to regret this, but I believe you. But you, she said pointing her finger at him, better not turn out to be a stalker! Before he could respond to what she said, she turned and proceeded to walk toward her car. When she reached it and opened the door, she turned and said Since you know where this place is, lead the way, and I’ll follow. And there it was again, that breathtaking smile. It lit up his whole face, and it was fast melting her heart.

As if in a trance, Anthony stood glued to the spot by the entrance to the bookstore, mesmerized by the feisty way she’d threatened him, the gentle sway of her hips, and the staccato sound of her heels hitting the pavement as she walked away. It was the sound of her car door slamming, that freed him from his reverie. Moving quickly he made it to his car, started the engine, and was about to pull off, when he realized she hadn’t started her engine. She was just sitting in her car staring into space.

Worried that she had indeed changed her mind, he rolled down his window, and blew his horn to get her attention. Alicia looked up startled at the sound, seemingly lost in thought. She turned slowly toward him, and rolled down her window.

Are you okay? He asked. Alicia blinked rapidly, and hesitated for a fraction of a second, before responding.

I’m okay, she said finally, smiling a tired smile. I was just having a little internal battle.

Who won? He asked hesitantly. Alicia smiled again, noting the worried expression on his face.

You did, she said. But you better get moving before round two. As she turned the key in the ignition, and her car roared to life, Anthony put his foot on the gas, and shot out of the parking lot as if he was being chased by the police. Alicia couldn’t help but laugh out loud, as she followed him, at a slightly slower pace. He had been right about the restaurant being so close. It had only taken them a few minutes to drive there from the bookstore. Had she not been so tired and wearing four inch heels, they could easily have walked. It’s a beautiful night tonight, she thought. As she followed behind his sexy red sports car, her internal battle raged on.

Girl, have you lost your last mind? Her conscious scolded. You don’t know anything about this man, besides the fact that he bought your book, and paid you a compliment. And he’s fine! Alicia fired back, you forgot that little detail. "Besides, it’s just a meal and a drink… or two." She thought, with a sly smile. Uh, yeah, with a perfect stranger! Her conscious tried again. In a public place, for God’s sake! Alicia countered. It’s not like I’m going to his place, or dragging him back to mine. As that thought entered her head, a wicked grin spread across her face, and she felt a delicious tingle, in a place that hadn’t tingled in a long time.

She was so engrossed in the back and forth with her annoying conscious, she almost missed seeing Anthony’s break lights and turn signal, as he turned into the restaurant parking lot. Anthony pulled into a spot close to the door, and signaled for Alicia to pull into a spot directly behind him. It gave her an excellent opportunity to sit and watch him unfold himself from the sleek sports car, which was a perfect complement to his GQ style. Looking closely, she noticed for the first time, that it was a Lexus.

She hadn’t really paid much attention to the car up until that moment, other than to note that is was red, her favorite color. Wow, that car must have cost a big chunk of change. She thought to herself. I wonder what Mr. Royce does for a living? Alicia turned off the engine and grabbed her purse, just as Anthony walked up to her car door. He opened it for her, and stood there while she locked it. As they walked toward the entrance to the restaurant, he looked up at the star filled sky, and sighed.

Wow, it’s a really beautiful night out, he said. This place is so close to the bookstore, I bet if you weren’t wearing those high heels, we could have walked here. Alicia laughed out loud, as she walked through the door, he held open for her. She laughed even harder at the puzzled look on Anthony’s face. This time it was his turn to ask, What’s so funny?

    What’s So Funny?

When they stepped inside the restaurant, the first thing Alicia noticed was that the place was much bigger on the inside, than it appeared from the outside. As they stood by the hostess desk waiting to be seated, she looked around at the set up. Directly across from the hostess desk, was a large u-shaped bar, with three huge flat-screen TVs hanging over it. The bar was surrounded by pub style tables and chairs, and behind them positioned around a low wall, were large u-shaped booths. On either side of the low wall was a wide aisle, which led to a larger room in the back. From where they stood, she could just make out a small stage, where a jazz quartet was playing contemporary jazz.

Is it just the two of you? The hostess asked as she walked up.

Yes. Anthony answered. We’d like to be seated in the back, if there’s a table available.

Yes, of course. She replied. Grabbing two menus, she started walking toward the back. Come this way please. She stopped at a table close enough to hear and enjoy the music, but not close enough to be over powered by it.

Is this okay? She asked. Or would you prefer one of the couches? Wait, what? Alicia thought, as she looked around, noticing for the first time, the cozy little love seats along the wall. She looked up just in time, to see Anthony give her a questioning look.

This is fine. She said, trying to ignore the voice in her head. Nope, nada—absolutely no way, you’re already playing with fire just being here in the first place. The voice warned. There’ll be no couches for you girlfriend!

As they sat down at the table, the hostess handed them the menus.

Your server will be with you shortly, she said. Please enjoy your evening. Alicia perused the menu unable to focus, self-consciously aware that Anthony was staring at her. She finally gave up the pretense, and returned his stare.

What? She asked. Smiling in response, he asked a question of his own.

So are you going to let me in on the joke?

What joke? She asked. Well, you were laughing your head off when we came through the door, was it something I said?

A huge grin spread across her face as she remembered, but before she could answer him, their server walked up to the table.

Good evening, my name is Tessa, and I’ll be taking care of you tonight. Can I start you off with some cocktails?

Do you have Riesling? Alicia asked.

Yes, mam, we do. She answered.

Then I’ll take a glass of that please.

And you sir? Tessa asked, turning her attention to Anthony. Alicia smiled to herself, when she noticed she wasn’t the only one affected by his dazzling smile.

I’ll have the same. He said.

Okay, she said, nodding as she wrote down their drink order. Are you ready to order now, or do you need a few more minutes?

A few more minutes please. They said in unison, and they both laughed. Take your time, she said. I’ll be back in a few minutes, with your drinks.

When Tessa disappeared to fill their drink order, Alicia turned to Anthony, and pointed to the menu.

I assume you’ve been here before, so what do you recommend?

Everything is good, he replied. I have a weakness for their wings. You can get them fried, roasted or baked and they have about thirty different flavors.

Is fast a flavor? Alicia asked, laughing, because I’m starved!

I don’t think that’s a flavor, he said, laughing. But if fast is what you want, I suggest the fried wings.

By the time Tessa returned with their wine, they had decided.

Are you ready to order now? She asked.

Yes, Alicia said. I’ll have the plain fried wings, with coleslaw, and some hot sauce on the side please.

No fries? Tessa asked. With a look of sadness, Alicia handed the menu back to her.

Uh, that would be a no, she said. No sense adding insult to injury.

I hear ya. Tessa said, laughing; assuming correctly, Alicia was referring to the fried wings.

I guess we all have to make compromises. She said. And what will you have sir? She asked Anthony.

Anthony was still studying the menu, and didn’t see the look on her face, nor did he notice her body language. Alicia almost chocked on her wine, and covered her mouth to hide her smile. Had they been in a relationship, she probably would have been pissed; but instead she was amused by the young woman’s obvious attraction. The look on Tessa’s face clearly said, if he’d been paying attention, he could have her. When he finally looked up clueless, he ordered the spicy barbeque wings.

I’ll have those with coleslaw, and fries, he said, accentuating the and fries, and giving Alicia a seductive wink.

Alicia felt her cheeks heating up, and with horror, realized she was blushing again. She hoped the low lights in the restaurant, made her beet red cheeks unnoticeable. She took another too big swallow of wine, and almost chocked again. "What’s the matter with you?" Her conscious asked. You’re acting like a smitten school girl! Oh shut up! Alicia fired back, and took another sip of wine.

Okay, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, Anthony said, pinning her with those sexy eyes. Are you finally going to tell me what I said, that was so funny?

Taking another sip of wine, Alicia smiled.

It was just that you spoke out loud, what I’d been thinking in the car on the way over here. She answered. Anthony looked confused.

    What exactly did I say?

Well, I was thinking what a beautiful night it is, how close this place is from the bookstore, and how if I hadn’t been so tired and wearing four inch heels, we could have walked here. She hesitated for a few minutes, as understanding dawned on his distractingly handsome face. As we were walking toward the entrance to the restaurant, you said exactly what I’d been thinking. It was if you’d read my mind.

He didn’t say anything for a long time, just held her captive with those eyes. Finally his face broke into a dazzling smile, and then just as quickly, he turned serious.

I told you I felt a connection. At the sound of his voice, Alicia felt a shiver travel the length of her body, and her face heated up again. She wanted to turn away from the look he was giving her, but she couldn’t convince her head to cooperate.

Her heart was doing that thing again, and she felt the warmth start to spread to other parts of her body. The room seemed to get smaller, and she could no longer hear the music from the jazz quartet, it was if they were suddenly the only two people there. In an attempt to escape his eyes and his words, she closed her eyes for a fraction of a second. Just long enough to see her conscious, arms crossed, shaking her head, and wagging her finger. Damn girlfriend! She said. You’re in trouble, big trouble!

I Thought You Said You weren’t A Stalker!

Alicia’s face felt red hot. She had no doubt Anthony could plainly see the affect his declaration had on her, and she was mortified. Fortunately, she was spared having to respond, as just in the nick of time, Tessa arrived with their food. Her stomach started to do a little dance when Tessa set her plate down in front of her. She hoped the wings tasted as good as they smelled. Alicia was grateful for the distraction, while she tried to sort out her unexpected reaction, to the man sitting across from her.

Before she could fully analyze her feelings, he interrupted her introspection with a question.

So, do you like the wings? He asked. After taking a beat to finish chewing, she answered.

Absolutely, they’re delicious and worth the wait. I guess I don’t have to ask if you are enjoying yours. She said, laughing as she watched him licking his fingers. That sight was disturbing enough, but then he speared a French fry with his fork, and waved it at her.

Are you sure you can’t have just one? He taunted.

She was glad she didn’t have anything in her mouth at the time, because she was sure she would have chocked to death, if she had. Is this man deliberately messing with my head? She thought to herself. As she was contemplating that question, Tessa reappeared, and asked if everything was okay. Alicia’s mouth felt so dry she could barely answer, so she just nodded her head. She desperately wanted to order another glass of wine, but since she was driving, she decided to play it safe, and just order a glass of water.

Can I get anything else for you? Tessa asked. Alicia couldn’t help but laugh inwardly, since she was sure the question was directed at Anthony.

I’d like a glass of water. Alicia said, attempting to remind her, she was still sitting there, too. Her diversion tactic only worked for a second.

I’ll have another glass of wine. Anthony said, flashing Tessa his most engaging smile, and once again Alicia was forgotten.

While they waited for her to return with their additional drinks, Alicia chewed absent mindedly on the remainder of her food. Her ravenous hunger satisfied for the moment, her mind wandered off. What is it about this man? She thought to herself.

I only met him a few hours ago, why is he triggering such visceral sexual tension in me? I know it’s been a long time, but come on!

She reflected on the few, emphasis on "few" she thought; encounters she’d had over the last five years. It’s not like she hadn’t been attracted to any of them, or that none had expressed an attraction to her. Some had been equally as fine as the man sitting across from her. A couple had sparked a fleeting desire for physical intimacy, but none had moved her the way this man did.

Before she could continue to contemplate his impact on her, Anthony interrupted her musings with a question.

I’m sorry, he said. Did I say something wrong? Realizing she’d zoned out, she looked up embarrassed.

I beg your pardon? She said, not knowing what he was referring to.

I asked, if I’d said something wrong. Did I open my mouth and insert my foot? He asked, with a tentative smile.

She shook her head, as if to exorcise the cob webs from her brain.

I think I’m the one who needs to apologize, she said. I’m afraid the fatigue has caught up with me, and I zoned out for a few minutes. I must confess, I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. What exactly did you say?

I teased you about having a French fry, he said. I didn’t mean to be insensitive or offend you. I realize you were attempting to eat healthy, or as healthy as possible under the circumstances. I shouldn’t have tried to tempt you. He said, sounding so sincere. Oh, you were definitely tempting me alright, she thought. But not with any damn French fry!

Despite the thoughts rolling around inside her head, Alicia couldn’t help but smile at the sheepish grin on his face.

Don’t worry, I didn’t take offense. No need to apologize, she said. The struggle is real, and I have to admit French fries are one of my weaknesses, along with sweets. If we’d had this meal earlier in the day, I’m sure I would have indulged. Unfortunately, I’ve been sitting most of the day. I’m pretty sure when I get home, I’m going straight to bed, which means those fries on top of these wings, would go straight to my hips. I was really just trying to avoid having to walk an extra thirty minutes on the treadmill tomorrow. She said, smiling.

Anthony laughed and shook his head. I completely understand, he said. But as far as I can tell, you have nothing to worry about. Do you remember what I said earlier, about your picture? He asked. Alicia could feel her cheeks start to burn, as she did in fact remember. Yes, I remember, she thought to herself. That’s what started all this mess. "You’re a very beautiful woman, Alicia. I would have never guessed, especially after seeing you in person, that you have two grown sons, and five grandchildren. In fact, I still can’t believe you were married for forty years. Did you get married when you were twelve?" He asked, laughing.

Like a candle blown out by a brisk wind, his laughed died in his throat, when he saw the look on her face. Alicia’s body had gone rigid, her eyes narrowed and she spoke in a voice that gave no doubt, she was extremely upset.

You know, you keep telling me you’re not a stalker, she said. "But you seem to know an awful lot about me, and I know next to nothing about you!" Her eyes were shooting sparks, and though no one had heard her but him, she might as well have been shouting.

Anthony chose his next words very carefully, sensing that one wrong word could put an end to this—whatever, this was between them. He knew what he felt was completely irrational—that it didn’t make any sense. He’d only known this woman for a few hours, but he’d been telling her the truth earlier when he told her he felt a connection. He did feel something! After years of missing and wanting, of needing, he wasn’t willing to let it go. Not until he at least knew what it was, or what it could be.

"I can understand you being upset, he said. I understand you being wary, but please believe me when I tell you again, I AM NOT A STALKER! Have you forgotten you are all over social media? Everything I just said is on your website. Most of what I know is from my sister, because she’s been reading your book. I’m on social media; most of my clients are on social media. I’m surprised I hadn’t run across you before now, but it was my sister who kept telling me how much we had in common. I saw your picture; I read the intro on the back cover of your book. I was intrigued and I wanted to see for myself. I’m sorry if I seemed cavalier about the personal details of your life, if I seemed, a bit too familiar. The last thing I want to do is frighten you, or push you away. I really just want to get to know you."

Lord, Please Just Kill Me Now!

Alicia’s whole body was on fire, from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. It wasn’t sexual tension this time, making her feel hot and flushed, but complete and utter embarrassment. Staring at the man sitting across from her, she said a silent prayer. Lord, please just kill me now! She wanted nothing more than for the floor to open up, and swallow her whole. While struggling to find the words to apologize for her bazaar behavior, she silently berated herself. Of course he knew all those things about you! He’s right, anybody whose read your book, or knows someone who’s read it, knows those things. Anybody who’s on Facebook, or Instagram, anybody who’s visited your website, or googled you, knows those things. They know because YOU put it out there! Wow Alicia, Really? You go from wondering if you’ll ever see this man again, to all but guaranteeing you’ll never see him again. I’m surprised he’s still sitting here. Now stop staring at the man, suck it up, open your mouth and say something!

"Anthony, I don’t really know where to start. You must think I’m some kind of paranoid fool." Before she could say anything more, he held up his hand.

Stop, he said. You don’t owe me an apology. You have every right to be cautious—to be wary. Let’s face it, there are some real crazies out there nowadays, but please believe me when I tell you, I’m not one of them! I promise!

His I promise along with the pleading look on his face, made her heart flutter and she felt her whole body go soft.

Does that mean you forgive me for acting like a crazy shrew? She asked. His response to her question was to shake his head and emit a husky laugh. The sound was like a soothing cool breeze on a hot summer day. It washed over her, and made her feel hot and cold at the same time. The gold flecks in his eyes sparkled and danced, causing her to experience a strong desire to caress his face. She imagined the feel of her fingers caressing his smooth cheek, and she could feel her own cheeks burning. The sound of his voice interrupted her fantasy.

I can’t imagine you acting like a crazy anything. I already told you, you have every right to be cautious. There’s nothing to forgive. You know what? I have an idea. Let’s start over. He said, smiling. He extended his hand across the table. Hi, my name is Anthony Royce. Alicia extended her hand to meet his.

Alicia Connors, she said. It’s nice to meet you. They were still holding hands and laughing, when Tessa reappeared with the check.

There was no mistaking the look of disappointment in her eyes, or the ice in her voice, when she saw the two of them holding hands. She sat the check on the table with a thud.

I’ll take this whenever you’re ready. She said, and walked away before they could respond. Anthony looked at her back as she skulked away and back at Alicia with raised eyebrows. Alicia pretending to be clueless shrugged her shoulders. "Sorry, girlfriend. She thought to herself. I know he’s fine, but I got here first!" It took all of her self-control to resist displaying a smug grin when Tessa returned to take Anthony’s credit card. She was thoroughly amused, as she observed the sullen expression on Tessa’s face when she returned. Her amusement doubled, when she saw her do a complete 360, after receiving the very generous tip he handed her. Ah, the power of the almighty dollar. Alicia thought, suppressing a laugh.

The combination of food and wine, on top of an already long day produced a severe case of drowsiness. Alicia tried unsuccessfully to stifle a yawn, and it did not go unnoticed by Anthony.

Hmmm, you’re either bored as hell, he said. Or the day is finally catching up with you. I’m definitely not bored, she thought to herself.

No, I’m not bored, she said, smiling. But the day is starting to catch up with me.

Well then, I guess we should be getting out of here, he said, reluctantly. Are you going to be okay to drive? He asked.

Yes, I’ll be okay. I’ve gotten used to surviving on little or no sleep. I haven’t slept more than three or four hours a night, since my husband died.

A look of understanding washed over his face.

I know the feeling. He said, his eyes becoming cloudy. Alicia saw his face transition from amused concern, to one of profound sadness. She recognized that look of pain triggered by a memory. A memory that sneaks up on you catching you off guard, transporting you to a place you thought you’d long escaped from. She wanted to know more about his pain, about what triggered that trip down memory lane. She had so many questions, but they would have to wait for another time. You’re assuming there will be another time, she thought to herself. Calm down girlfriend; don’t go counting your chickens before they’re hatched!

Anthony didn’t want the evening to end. He’d really enjoyed her company, even when he almost blew it by running his mouth, he thought. She was very classy. He really liked the way she carried herself, the way she talked, the way she dressed and the way she smelled. He could tell she was comfortable, and could hold her own in any situation. There was something exciting and very sexy about the way she looked when she was angry. She was every bit the lady, but when her eyes spit fire, and her voice got all low and steely, there was no doubt in his mind, she could go "west side" on a brotha in a heartbeat, if provoked. He smiled remembering. He guessed she was about five foot two or three in her bare feet, but she looked like she’d have no problem going toe to toe with somebody twice her size.

He believed his sister was right about them having a lot in common, and he really wanted to explore that. Then stop sitting here like an idiot. Open up your mouth and let her know it, he said to himself. As Alicia searched in her purse for her keys and prepared to leave, Anthony summoned the courage to ask her out again.

I really enjoyed tonight. Even after, I put my foot in my mouth, he said, smiling. Is there any chance we could do this again sometime?

Alicia’s heart leapt in her chest. She didn’t know what moved her more, the pleading look on his face, or the mere fact that he wanted to see her again. She tried to play it cool and not reveal how much she wanted to do a little jig. Very casually, she dug in her purse again, produced her business card, and sat it on the table in front of him. She flashed him what she hoped was her most beguiling smile, as she turned to walk away.

I think that can be arranged. She said over her shoulder, moving toward the exit.

Anthony almost knocked over his chair, as he stood up abruptly to follow her.

Hey wait! Let me walk you to your car. She slowed down a little, allowing him to catch up.

It’s very nice of you to walk me to my car, she said, as she walked through the door. I want you to know I really enjoyed the evening, too, before and after I made a fool of myself. She said, smiling. Before she could say anything else, he held his hands up, making the time-out sign.

I thought we agreed to start over? All of that is forgotten and we’re not going to mention it again, okay?

Okay. She said, and smiled. He opened her door for her after she unlocked it. She rolled down the window after she got in and started the car.

He stood there for a few minutes, wanting to say something, but knowing it was way too soon to say what he was feeling. He finally managed to say, "Drive carefully."

I will, you too, she said. Good night. Anthony stood there in the dark, ginning like a fool, as he watched her car disappear out of the parking lot. Don’t get carried away man, he said to himself. Slow your roll, you’ve been here before. Take it one day at a time.

I Can’t Wait To See You Again

I might as well have had that second glass of wine. Alicia thought, as she negotiated the dark streets, on her way home. I couldn’t have been anymore intoxicated or distracted than
