    Chapter 1

    Moles

    Moles are quiet creatures that live most of their lives underground; they have large families and enjoy a cosy existence minding their own business. Sometimes, due to making lots of tunnels, they push up mounds of earth which look like small hills. Usually this does not cause any problems but sometimes it does. Also Moles sometimes dig and pop out onto the top of their small hill just to look around and wonder at the views and the sometimes noisy existence of others.

    Our family of Moles – the Teasels – have lots of children, they all live in a safe strip of land next to a field. Up until now there has been plenty of room to dig out new areas for their children, who are growing up and now have children of their own. However they are now getting close to what they understand is called ‘a Road’. All they know is that it is important not to get any closer to ‘the Road’ as strange noisy, fast creatures hurtle along this with no known purpose. Mostly Moles are friendly and don’t mind how many Moles live in the same place. However Ragwort Teasel, the Teasel’s youngest son, now 8 months old (16 in HBean years) was not happy, as he was always last to get any dinner and last in the bath. So he decided to try to find another place for the family to extend into.

    He had been told by his parents that he should only tunnel north and south, not east or west as it was dangerous, but they had never explained what the danger was, other than to the west there was a giant noisy creature, similar to the ones on the Road except that it was not fast, but very slow and also it
