He lectures on the clinical impact of the therapist’s subjectivity and his most recent book is The Relational Revolution in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (Confer Books, 2020). He is also the Former Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Perspectives and Past President of IARPP.

Introduction: Setting sail for the New World
Psychoanalysis is a vibrant clinical process that continues to reinvent itself, finding new meanings for its methodology, as the experience and concerns of its participants change and develop.

From the 1970–1980s and the advent of feminism, queer studies and postmodern thought (subjective, fallible, relative experience rather than objectivist truth or abstract principles that are assumed to be definite and universal), many in the mental health community began to more actively join with earlier sceptics and outright critics to challenge classical psychoanalysis’s hierarchical, authoritarian, North American, Caucasian-centric, heterosexist perspective on human development and functioning (Shapiro, 1996; Levine, 2003). For many years before then, psychoanalysis had been criticized for at best misunderstanding women or, at worst, outright misogyny (Mitchell, J., 2000). Homosexuality was considered a perversion and even diagnosable pathology, and of course it wasn’t until very recent years that transgender people were recognized as potentially ‘healthy’ individuals who could be treated psychoanalytically for anything other than their ‘obvious pathology’.
Even those with a more forgiving or positive attitude towards the profession were beginning to recognize the limitations of an interpretive-heavy objectivist perspective in which an all-powerful, all-knowing authority could know another mind better than the patient could. In the United States and elsewhere, against this revolutionary backdrop of the 1960s, personal empowerment and the recognition of the above-named marginalized groups, psychoanalysis became more and more criticized from without and even from within the profession. It is in this context and against the backdrop of increasingly popular non-psychoanalytic treatment methods – such as cognitive–behavioural therapy with its promise of quick, evidence-based, manualized approaches and cure – that Relational psychoanalysis was born.
It is perhaps beyond the scope of this book to conjecture why it is that, in many cases, non-psychoanalytic mental health practitioners and the lay public seem not to be particularly familiar with psychoanalytic approaches other than classical Freudian, Jungian and/or Lacanian perspectives. These are the only psychoanalytic theories that seem to be taught in university undergraduate and graduate psychology, English or philosophy departments. They are no longer the most commonly taught perspectives in postgraduate training programmes and institutes; however, where advanced, postgraduate study is required for those who are interested in pursuing training to become a psychoanalyst after receiving their graduate degree in psychology, social work, psychiatry and the like.
This book will attempt a somewhat rare feat. Primarily written for clinicians and theorists, both in and outside of psychoanalysis, it will also attempt to serve as an introduction to one of the most exciting and still relatively new perspectives in psychoanalysis – even more than 30 years after its founding – for an interested non-professional readership as well. And for those already familiar with Relational psychoanalysis, my hope is that it will serve as an elementary textbook of a sort, introducing or reviewing key concepts and providing carefully considered citations and references for those who want to examine original and supplemental sources. As of this writing, and at least as far as I’m aware, this is one of the few introductory texts to Relational thinking since Greenberg and Mitchell’s pioneering work (1983, though this text was written to introduce what came to be known as small r relational psychoanalysis, which preceded most of the concepts that I outline here in the pages to follow) and subsequent volumes by Lewis Aron (1996), Paul Wachtel (2008), Skolnick and Warshaw’s edited volume (1992), Loewenthal and Samuels’ edited collection (2014), Cornell and Hargaden’s (2005) compendium of Relational writing within Transactional Analysis, and Barsness’s edited work (2017). It may be the first primer, however, and, in that respect, it is designed to provide an overview of both foundational as well as newer thinking developed by the early founders of this perspective and subsequent generations of Relational thinkers. All theoretical material is illustrated with clinical examples, and the volume concludes with thoughts about areas in need of further study and emphasis.
EARLIEST USE OF THE TERM ‘RELATIONAL’
Jay Greenberg and Stephen Mitchell (1983) sought to differentiate between object relations theory – what they saw as an intrapsychic theory – and interpersonal psychoanalysis, which de-emphasized the internal world in favour of a focus on intersubjective, here-and-now relating. They first coined the term ‘relational’ as a way of identifying a common theme among a diverse group of theories that had not previously been considered connected or unified in any way.¹ Each of the schools that appeared under the new umbrella of relational (interpersonal, object relations, self-psychology, intersubjectivity theory) emphasized a person’s embeddedness in the social context (rather than the isolated individual) as the primary unit of study. But it wasn’t until his first solo authored book (1988) that Mitchell began using the term, Relational, to also refer to a newly developing perspective – in some ways overlapping with but also distinct from the earlier theories that he and Greenberg had included under the heading of relational psychoanalysis.
As mentioned above, Mitchell’s new thinking arose from a melding of (especially Fairbairn’s) object relations theory (of internalized objects and related intrapsychic phenomena, as discussed in Dimitrijevic, 2014) with interpersonal psychoanalysis (see Mitchell & Black, 1995; Stern, 2017), a theory with more emphasis on interpersonal, here-and-now, in-the-room dynamics than unconscious fantasy, as well as feminist, queer, gender and other social, philosophical and more recently political, cross-cultural and attachment theories (see Chapters 8 and 9). This new and expanded perspective also became referred to as ‘big R’ Relational psychoanalysis in order to distinguish it from Mitchell’s original use of the term relational. Because of where it originated, Relational psychoanalysis is sometimes referred to as the New York School or North American Relational psychoanalysis but its influence has spread internationally, in large part because of IARPP – the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy – the organization Mitchell founded just before his untimely death in 2000 (Kuchuck, 2017).
If it’s not already confusing enough to differentiate between relational and Relational – not always properly capitalized when written and of course, rather unfortunately, pronounced no differently when spoken – there are further confounding variables that can make it difficult to grasp, teach and learn this way of thinking. Note that so far, and throughout, I have used the terms ‘perspective’ and ‘way of thinking’ – a sensibility, according to Mitchell – rather, or at least more often, than ‘theory’ or ‘school of thought’. That’s because there is no singular ‘school’ of big R Relational psychoanalysis with codified rules and authoritative dictates agreed upon by all who identify as Relational. Related, although Stephen Mitchell was the first to use the term, he quickly invited colleagues Lewis Aron, Tony Bass, Philip Bromberg, Jessica Benjamin, Margaret Black Mitchell, Jody Davies, Emanuel Ghent, James Fosshage, Neil Altman, Irwin Hoffman and numerous others who I will be citing throughout this text to join him in defining and expanding this new orientation to psychoanalytic thinking (most from the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, which created the very first courses in Relational psychoanalysis in 1988, and with many joining him in the founding of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, the first Relational journal, in 1991 and writing books for the first relational book series, founded in 1990). In that respect, Relational psychoanalysis is one of the only psychoanalytic orientations – if not the only one – not created by a single founder.
For these and other reasons that will be explored in this text – chief among them is the emphasis placed on the importance of examining the impact of each practitioner’s unique subjectivity on their ways of conceptualizing theory and practice technique (to the extent that specific techniques exist in as fixed a form as the word suggests) – the approach to psychoanalysis that Mitchell first identified in 1988 has often been referred to as a perspective rather than a theory or school. There are a number of universal characteristics in Relational psychoanalysis. These include, but are not limited to, dialectical movement between the intrapsychic and interpersonal (think blending of object relations and interpersonal theories with a dose of the classical perspective for some practitioners, though Mitchell himself – unlike Jay Greenberg, for example (Aron, Grand & Slochower, 2018a, p. 35) – insisted that his evolving perspective could absolutely not accommodate drive theory), acknowledgement of intersubjectivity and the related, aforementioned inevitable impact of the analyst’s subjectivity, multiplicity and many other variables that will be detailed in the following pages (Aron, 1996; Harris, 2011). Still, each Relational analyst defines and practises the perspective in his or her own particular way. For example, see Pizer (1992) and Slochower (2018a) for illustrations of how each of these important Relational thinkers incorporates the work of Winnicott into their Relational visions. In an IARPP seminar several years ago, Jody Davies (2008) described the first generation of Relational analysts as ‘immigrants’, who, dissatisfied with their native psychoanalytic homelands, set sail for the New World and landed, as she put it, ‘on the shores of the relational turn
