About this ebook

There are many positions believed to be impossible in Nigeria. Among them are that the youth will never be president. Most of all, a woman will never be president in Nigeria.
However, there are no limitations in the creative world. Hence, "Breaking News" is a satirical exploration of the possibility of young Nigerians suddenly becoming aware and refusing to make the same mistakes their parents made. A young girl Miss Sonoyan Mauyon-Jones caused Breaking News as the first female youth president in Nigeria.

Breaking News - Jude Swing Udueni

    FOREWORD

Politics is a broad phenomenon that affects man in all spheres of his life endeavour; family, business, culture, religion, academics etc.

The theme of politics is always on the front burner of global and social discourses and has instigated writers all over the world to document in the different genres of creative writing; poetry, prose and drama, personal, regional (local), national and international experiences and consequences.

The theme of politics has also inspired artist of other creative genres: Visual arts; painting, ceramics, sculpture, metal scrap etc., as well as the performing arts; dance, music, comedy, storytelling etc., to extensively express themselves in their chosen media.

Humanity is constantly faced with one problem type or the other thus leaving man with no option but to always seek solutions to the myriad problems emanating from different sectors. Consequently, everyone in every society craves for good governance, better living conditions, stable economy, security etc.

Here lies the thread of Jude Udueni's  Breaking News woven through other silent but salient sub themes as thuggery, kidnap, assault, morality, freedom of speech, women and politics, and many more as can be deduced from the story.

The play basically set in familiar family setting and ghetto scenes,  juxtaposes the consciousness of the emerging generation, represented Dada, Amao and Tani all children of Hajji Bello, against the archaic and analog ideology of the old generation painted in the character of Hajji Bello father of Dada, Amao, Tani and husband to Mishellia mother of the three children.

The central ingenuity of this tragic political satire runs through a complex plot of interest that finds Hajji Bello killing his son through the engagement of a political thug hired to kill his political opponent due to his die hard political ambition. The play ends on a note of vanity upon vanity is vanity as Hajji Bello lost on both ends , losing the election to a young female contender, Sonoyan.

Breaking News  is  must read for everyone because examines current national and international political experiences as well as social issues with lots of lessons to be learned
