Three grande lattes, one with a triple shot and one with hazelnut syrup, an iced mocha, a chai tea… I rattle off the order with a note of pride in my voice. I don’t even have to refer to the scribbled notes I made in the back of my planner. It’s only Friday, but after one week working as an intern I have my office’s coffee order memorised by heart.

Two chocolate chip cookies, a slice of the iced lemon loaf, one brownie and, um… My eyes scan the array of pastries and cakes displayed under the glass counter. Oh! And a blueberry muffin, please.

I smile with genuine happiness at the barista, pleased that I managed to remember everything. He starts making the coffees and I fiddle with the loose button on the front of my blouse. I’ve been meaning to sew it back on properly for a while, but I always forget about it until the next time I wear it.

The button is really loose by now, held on by the thinnest of threads.

The next moment, that thread snaps.

I squeak in surprise as the button pings out from between my fingers and rolls away across the floor, disappearing under a table.

Your order’s ready, the barista says, sliding a tray of takeaway cups across the counter, the sweet treats bundled up in a paper bag.
