Book 1 - Minimalism: Uncomplicated life. Own less for a better lifestyle. Minimalism Challenge - 10 step plan for beginners ––––––––
What is minimalism?
The shortest answer to What is minimalism?
is this: minimalism is simplicity.
Well, let's elaborate on that, because that's pretty vague.
Minimalism is deliberate simplicity. It works purposefully against the ideas instilled in you by a consumer society so that you can live a simple, uncluttered life that allows you to focus on what matters most to you (work goals, family, and/or hobbies , Etc.). And minimalism doesn't just apply to your home, although you'll see many things related to minimalist decluttering. Minimalism also includes the things you do (only activities you really care about) and even the people you spend time with (cutting out from people who aren't good for you, regardless of whether you want to be a minimalist or not). Minimalism means stripping your life down to the essentials and resisting the temptation to do everything else.
What is minimalism? - A minimalist life is a free, happy life. But it can be difficult to transition into this type of lifestyle without help. This book will answer all your minimalism questions and help you start your minimalist life!
––––––––
What minimalism isn't is some anti-obsessions, monastic style, extreme lifestyle. You don't have to sell your house, complete with all the trimmings, and move into a farmhouse or cabin in the woods (though many minimalists love the ideas in Thoreau's Walden). You can keep living where you live and you can still buy stuff. You just have to change the way you think about some things.
How minimalists think
Learning how minimalists think is crucial to answering the question what is minimalism
. In general, all people think based on a common belief system. This belief system is at the core of how they see the world and is a combination of what they have experienced and what they have been taught.
Minimalists also have a belief system that governs their every thought and therefore their actions. In general, their belief system is this: that the world is too busy because we are all trying to do and buy too much. They also believe that happiness lies in simplicity, and that one can have both a modern life and a happy simple life if one is careful about what one puts into that life. Finally, many minimalists believe that society has become too consumerist, that there is too much focus on learning and not enough focus on experiencing.
Let's take a real-life example of how minimalists versus consumerists think. Let's say a new smartphone with the latest display is available in a store. A highly consumer-oriented person can't wait to buy it and have the latest smartphone in their possession.
In contrast, a minimalist may look at the phone thinking it's a nice new phone, but will shrug and move on. They don't need another phone, and getting another phone isn't critical to one of their main goals right now.
And it's not just about money, although the minimalist in the example above is obviously the most frugal person. It's really about the quality of life. Even if the minimalist had tons of money in the bank, they still wouldn't buy the phone because they know the phone would be just another complication of another possession in your life. It would only bring more possessions, not add to the wealth of their lives.
How to start thinking like a minimalist.
Now that you have the answer to What is minimalism?
you may be wondering how to start becoming a minimalist. It can be difficult to shift from a consumerist mindset to a minimalist mindset as they are essentially polar opposites of each other. In Germany, society starts with children being consumer-oriented at an early age (think of all the advertising on children's television channels and all the toys connected to children's favorite characters). As soon as you grow up with an income, you are tempted to buy 50% of anything that comes to your mind. Being frugal reduces this consumerist urge, but not as much as minimalism. Because while frugality teaches you to save money to buy things you really want, minimalism asks you why you want that thing in the first place.
What is minimalism? - You can be happier with less! This book will answer all your questions about minimalism and help you learn how to start thinking like a minimalist!
The best way to change your attitude towards a minimalist one is to take some time and really think about it. Think about what you really want from life and why you want it. Do you
