    Comrades to Lovers - Sabrina

    Comrades to Lovers

    By Sabrina

    Part One

    Chapter 1

‘Come on Pete, get your fat arse up here’.

Pete Collingham was pulled up onto the back of the truck by two hands and as he gained purchase onto the back of the vehicle the hands let go and he dropped himself down onto the wooden planks that were now being used as a bench to house two rows of soldiers, Pete looked at the man by his side, ‘thanks but you can drop the fat arse comments, you will never find a more toned backside that mine’.

‘Fucking sit down and shut up, and I could not give a rat’s fanny about your arse’.

The man by his side spat out the words and Pete wished for once the men in his unit could be nice to each other, Jesus they were going through a war together.  He sat and looked across at the material covering their lorry and tried not to make eye contact with the man now opposite him.

The lorry loaded quickly and the engine which had been idling as the men boarded roared and with the driver seemingly hitting every bump he could find in the road they began moving.

A few minutes into their journey one of the first men in and one that was now standing the furthest from the back of the lorry spoke, ‘listen up, we are going into the nearby town, there are reports of enemy holding out in the buildings, so we are going to do a building-to-building search.  If we find someone and they do not surrender then we shoot to kill and move on, we need this town cleared double quick, there are boots on the ground now moving in from the south so be wary we don’t end up shooting at ourselves, got that’.

There were a few murmurs before a voice shouted out, ‘do they know we’re coming, you know, not to shoot us’.

The lorry lurched to the right after hitting another hole in the road and the man standing steadied himself on a soldier sitting close to him, ‘for fuck’s sake, yes, they know reinforcements are coming and they know we are clearing from the west but be careful it’s the yanks that are there so, well I don’t need to say any more’.

The murmurings continued with once voice louder than the rest, ‘bunch of fucking gun toting cowboys, but don’t worry lads you’ll notice em, they’ll be the ones chewing gum and waving fucking women’s stockings above their head trying to get into whatever knickers are about’.

The men laughed and the sergeant even gave a short smile as he thought how the stereo types are often true, ‘alright, but look out for them and keep your heads down, there are enemy fighters out there and they are looking to hold us back as long as they can’.

After a brief pause another voice spoke up, ‘why are they holding onto it, it’s only a small town’.

The sergeant knew there were reasons for their mission, and he knew he’d not been given all the information, need to know and all that, but he had checked the map before he gave instructions to the driver and a couple of hundred yards beyond the last of the houses was a fork in the road.

A bit of chatter had started up, ‘listen up ladies, good question and as always, the plebs don’t need to know, but there’s a junction just beyond the town and my guess is, whoever runs the town runs the junction and with this the only road for fuck knows how far, any supply runs will have to go through there and that is for both sides.  So, we take the town, clear it out and then we can send our boys through and keep the bastards on their toes, keep them running home to their mothers’.

Another voice shouted, ‘and we can go fuck their mothers when we catch up with them’.

A cheer erupted around the lorry and the sergeant banged on the wooden plank by his knees to get the attention, ‘there will be no fucking until we clear the town’.

The sergeant began pointing at the men, ‘you take three and do the right side of the first street, you take three and take the left, we’re gonna drive down the centre to the first crossroads and see if any of them are stupid enough to shoot and show their positions.  If not, then the rest of us will start on the road to the left of the crossroads, left side you join us when you’ve checked these buildings.  Right side, you go to the small street on the right when you’ve done yours and then make your way back to the crossroads and hold position for us to return.  We’ll regroup then and I will give the next set of orders’.

He looked around the lorry at the faces some of whom were staring at him and the rest down at the floor, ‘have you got that’.

There was a chorus of yes sergeant, with the voices falling silent the sergeant gave one final look around the vehicle and sat down.  There was no talk as the engine pretty much drowned anything out other than what was shouted, and most thoughts were now on the mission and what they might face when the lorry stopped.

The sergeant looked around the men, checking their faces, he just wanted to get there and get out of the vehicle, he knew what was coming and what he had to do so he just wanted to get on with it, he knew that was shared by almost all of the men in his company.

Ten more minutes passed and then a hatch slid open between the cab and the back of the lorry, a face appeared looking at the men in the back, ‘sarge, the town is up ahead, we’ll be there in about a minute’.

He would have liked a little more time, but this was war, he stood up and shouted, ‘one minute remember what your orders are, left and right sides, get ready to jump when we stop, make for the first building fast, they may start shooting as soon as they see us, we will move on and we’ll all meet up at the crossroads when we’ve checked and secured every building in this area.  One word of warning, we don’t think so but there may be civilians in the houses hiding, women, children, tell them what we are doing and keep them hidden, any men maybe hostiles hiding amongst them, round them up and we will work out later if they can be released.  Do not go fucking shooting everyone you see, we don’t want a bloodbath and we don’t want irate locals causing problems when we’ve taken the town, if there are any’.

There was no time for any comeback as the lorry slowed quickly and the sergeant shouted for them to run.

Men exited the vehicle quickly, running to their designated sides of the street and holding cover whilst they took in their surroundings.  The lorry moved off quickly, men moving to the rear with guns ready just in case the enemy shot at them.

Despite the roar of the old diesel engine the street was quiet, a few bicycles were resting against the outside of the houses, but no cars were visible.  The men looked down the street and it was clear this area of the town was a poor one and despite not taking much damage from any fighting it still looking dilapidated.

Pete had been designated the left side of the street and quickly entered the first house, it was a small bungalow with only a few rooms, the three men searched it quickly and hoisting one of his comrades on their shoulders he popped the loft hatch and looked inside.  It was clear, on the kitchen table was a large bottle of water, left by whoever last occupied the buildng, each man in turn took a drink and when it was empty, they replaced it exactly where they had found it.

The looked down the street and saw that the right-side force had already entered the second house and they quickly did the same, they needed to keep up so that anyone hiding did not cross the road and hit them from the rear.

Pete noticed that the houses all looked like they had been evacuated quickly and he guessed it had been when the enemy invaded, whether they had taken them or they had fled, he had no idea, but he thought it did make it easier not having to deal with frightened locals, even if they were pleased to see them.

It took only ten minutes to check the houses on their side and when they turned into the side street to meet up with the sergeant, they too were making good progress

An hour later and all the men were sat in one of the houses at the crossroads and making use of whatever chairs were available as they ate and drank.  One of the squads had found tea and had scrambled enough materials to make a hot drink which was a welcome relief to the cold water they were expecting.  Two men kept watch, but the thought of enemy snipers was in their minds as the men laughed and chatted.

It was the sergeant’s rousing call that stopped all that and to the sounds of moans and groans they prepared to move on, as they were about to move the sergeant stood in their path, ‘listen, listen, listen’.

His last word was yelled louder than he would have liked, ‘it’s been easy for now, but we know there are enemy here, hiding, get complacent and the next thing you know, you or your buddy is laid face down in the shit’.

He kicked the ground to emphasise his words.

‘We’re going up toward the main street and we will meet resistance, maybe not straight away but we will and if they are smart, they will wait until we are on top of them and then ambush us, we are out in the open here and we can be picked off really easily.  When we get out of this house they could be anywhere.

He paused to let his words sink in and then looked around the faces, wondering which ones will not be at his next impromptu briefing, ‘same as before but straight split, you, you and you lot take the right, I will take the left with the rest,
