This book is dedicated to all those who have lost sleep worrying about that presentation they had to deliver the next day. Whether that be a presentation for a job interview, a sales update, a product pitch or even a book report back in High School. Say This, Get That! will not only level the playing field so you can compete with your competition- but give you a distinct advantage over them!
You may still lose sleep, but it will because you can’t wait until you get to stand in front of that audience and grab their attention and take them on a road trip that ultimately gets you what you want!
I also dedicate to this book to the one person that has supported me in every career move I have made, laughed with me when things were easy and challenged me when things were difficult. She is my most trusted sounding board- and without her this book and the experiences I talk about in it would never have existed. Thanks to my wife Kelley for being there for me at every step of this journey!

Introduction:
Gary DiLeo—Say This, Get That!
I was playing the odds that I wouldn’t be called on. After all, there were twenty-five other students in this tenth-grade oceanography class, and we only had time for three or four of them to stand up in front of the class and deliver their book report.
We did this once a month, on Tuesdays—so, if I was lucky and didn’t make eye contact with Mr. K, our strict but fair instructor (who we will refer to as Mr. K because I still fear this guy, even forty years later!), I figured I probably could get through the entire school year, not ever having to stand in front of the class and brief them on the book I read. I was wrong.
This was my very first learning when it came to overcoming the fear of public speaking. If you don’t put the work into preparing for your presentation, you absolutely should fear it. And lesson two: if you are called on to deliver a brief on the book you were supposed to have read for the class, it would be a good idea to actually have read the book.
Unfortunately, I had not only forgotten
to read a book for the class, but I also hadn’t even identified a book to possibly read for the class. I was so sure I wouldn’t be called on that I decided that the whole task was likely not needed. I was wrong, again.
As Mr. K randomly scanned the class to decide who he was going to select for today’s slaughter (at least that’s how it felt to me), I did my best to pretend I was taking some notes on something . . . anything! Don’t look him in the eye, I kept telling myself. Part of the process was, he would first ask you which book you read—something Oceanography-related, of course. And if he was intrigued enough by the title and quick overview, he would select you to come up in front of the class and deliver a summary of the book and even answer some questions if anyone had any.
Mr. DiLeo,
(I can still hear that stern voice today) Please let everyone know what book you would like to share with the class today.
Ok, as I mentioned previously, this request created some real challenges for me. First, I didn’t even have the name of a book, much less have a summary of the said book.
Another good learning: the show must go on! I certainly couldn’t divulge the fact that I had not done the assignment; however, looking back, that was probably a better idea. Instead, I quickly glanced at a National Geographic magazine cover I had on my desk. We had many of these in this classroom, as they fit the subject matter quite well. One of the featured articles on the cover was Shark Fishermen of the Cortez.
Without hesitation, that is the name of the book I shared with Mr. K. As you might have guessed, his next sentence was, Tell us a bit about the book.
Luckily, the title of the book was enough for the description I needed. It’s about the challenges these fishermen face when they are fishing for sharks in the Cortez,
I said somewhat confidently. His expression was not what I was hoping for; it was an expression of interest and curiosity. He said, That sounds very interesting. Looking forward to hearing you tell us all about it today!
I will never forget that feeling of DOOM I had when I heard that from him.
I basically had about fifteen minutes to read the article and prepare to stand in front of my classmates and deliver a book
report on a magazine
article I had not yet read! Two presenters in front of me, then I am on.
No time to overthink it. Read as much of the article as you can, take a few notes and hope I don’t pass out in front of everyone. What could possibly go wrong? First thing
