I remember this day as if it were yesterday. It was one scorching hot summer day in July, and my dad took me to my first car auction.
My passion for cars has never been the same since. It became a part of who I am today, and it was the same for my dad. Trent Ambrose, (alias my dad) promised to tell me how this one day at the auction with his old man, changed his life. I wasn’t ready to handle that yet, apparently. My dad was a Car Broker by choice and passion. One of his many jobs required him to travel to car auctions all over the country on a weekly basis looking for the right car, truck, motorcycle, or even a boat for his clients.
Trent Ambrose was knowledgeable about any and all vehicles, including the ones with specialty options that he had to accost in order to satisfy his customer. He learned early on that staying two steps ahead of the curve kept him relevant and in business. My dad would tell me that he had to stay current, which meant he had to keep himself educated with all the new technology in order to be competitive in his business. He would use the Ambrose network of contacts
countrywide, which helped him acquire such connections over the years. This meant that he would be able to track down the vehicle that would be the closest fit for each customer’s needs. It was always about satisfying the customer no matter how many obstacles he had to go through.
My old man had built up quite a successful business, whether it was locating the right vehicles for his customers or family and friends. He had such a passion, that it left everyone impressed. My dad loved cars plain and simple. He loved the old ones, the new ones, the big ones, and the small ones. Trent never got tired of searching for them and admiring them. This passion was passed over to me, Maverick Miles Ambrose.
Most people called me Mav or Miles while my folks, teachers and occasionally my principal would refer to me as "Mr. Maverick Miles Ambrose. Let’s just say it was because they were trying to get my attention or even slightly upset with me. It never got old seeing all the newest car models, new body styles, and all the cars he had not seen yet in person. The minute one of his dealer buds got a brand-new model in, Trent would stop what he was doing and show up as if he was a kid in a candy store.
Most days at the auction were enjoyable, and never felt like work for Trent. His clientele was constantly growing, mostly from word of mouth and a homemade website we put together. He did his absolute best to make sure all his customers had a good experience working with him, unlike most experiences with salesmen.
There was never a time that my father got tired of seeing up close and personal all of the new body-styles that came out yearly. Every other week depending on the auction site, dealers would bring their exotic cars to the auction. Those were crazy spectacular days you didn’t want to miss. Most of his local regulars were big 4X4 diesel truck guys, because of their work they did and because of the extreme winters they had in their small town of Stevensville Montana.
During that summer when business slowed down a bit, Trent thought to himself that he would like to take me to one of the local auctions for the day. He was hoping that I would get a kick out of seeing what he did for
