FINDING THE SPEAKER'S EDGE - Michael D. Butler

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Like you, Michael D. Butler has been speaking all his life.

But he didn’t find his voice until age 12, doing a speech for his English class on meteorology.

Butler stuttered as a child from age 5 to age 11, and although naturally outgoing and gregarious, he went into his shell and became imaginative and creative, in order to cope with the isolation the stuttering caused. Later, with the help of a speech therapist, he’d emerge from his cave and find great pleasure in being the class clown and the life of the party.

Butler did 3,000 paid speaking events in the 90s. He also spoke internationally through interpreters, and at the largest bilingual church in Miami, Alpha and Omega Church. He spoke primarily as a pastor in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and also spoke on the road.

    Finding Your Voice

When did you first find your voice? When did you realize your voice could get you what you wanted? A screaming baby makes 98 percent of adults take action: find a binkie, bring a diaper or a bottle, pick the baby up and rock the baby. Voices are designed to move us.

But at some point in our lives, we lose our voice. We’re told many times to be quiet, to not speak, told to listen and bite our tongue. Maybe it’s a parent, a teacher a sibling, classmates, a coach, or a pastor. Too many times we internalize be quiet and imply the meaning, My voice does not matter. We are told to color inside the lines and told to be quiet. Many children stop thinking logically at this point; we adopt group think, and we comply, so we’ll fit in and not be publicly
