    ‘SNOW BECOMES ALONE’

    SYNOPSIS

Left on her own after her owners fail to return home after a simple days outing Snow escapes from the house in search of her owners only to become lost in the cold.

Feeling hungry and afraid she hides under cover of the bushes at the side of the road.

A young crippled girl and her parents find Snow and take her home with them.

The young girl’s fondness of Snow has a miraculous effect on her when she is suddenly able to walk.

Eventually, Snow’s actual owners, having returned home to find her gone are reunited with Snow and her new family.

Snow remains with her new family and new friendships are made.

    CHAPTER ONE

The wind outside the old, small, brick cottage sounded fierce. The two adults in the sparsely furnished lounge room, the low fire warming them, looked at each other calmly. Although the warmth of the fire was comfortable, Jack and Elisabeth, seated on the double lounge, had wrapped themselves in their fur blankets, watching their favourite television show. Their blue cattle dog Snow, was comfortably snuggled under her extra blanket in her basket in the corner of the lounge room.

Elisabeth looking lovingly over at the bulky blanket and then at Jack, joked, Our Snow lives the life of Riley.

Jack, grinning at his wife, answered I must admit Elisabeth she sure is one real spoilt dog.

Their television show finished, Elisabeth ordered, Come on Jack, it is bed time.

The movement under the blanket, in the basket, had Elisabeth smile and call, It is your bedtime too Miss Snow!

As the days passed the weather became more chilled from the sleeting rain.

Jack chopped wood for the fire. He needed to fix the broken door at the back of the house but his makeshift repair was holding well so it could wait.

Elisabeth spent time in the kitchen cooking.

Snow chased her ball around the small closed-in verandah.

Jack’s persistent, loud coughing had Elisabeth worried. He had refused to see the doctor insisting that it was nothing to worry about.

One day Jack’s coughing became too unbearable for him and he realised that a visit to the doctor was necessary. Catching Elisabeth’s attention he started to tell her, Perhaps you were right to worry about me and …

Before he could finish Elisabeth sternly replied I will call the doctor tomorrow and make you an appointment!

    CHAPTER TWO

The day of Jack’s appointment with the doctor finally arrived.

The weather had not improved any with now a light dusting of snow on the ground.

Rugged up in their heavy coats and galoshes, Elisabeth having checked that all was right around the house and assured that Snow’s dishes were filled gave snow a long cuddle, then told her, You be a good dog and mind the house while we are gone … and do not lick any burglars.

Jack gave Snow a quick wink and a salute then grabbing the umbrella, followed Elisabeth out the front door.

The door closed, Snow looked at her ball then giving a loud bark she jumped into her basket and fell asleep.

The kitchen was almost dark when Snow awoke. Looking around her and jumping from her basket she headed for her food bowl and began eating.

Not having been left on her own for so long before, Snow gave several long, loud barks before playing with her ball. Feeling somewhat confused that Jack & Elisabeth had not come home, Snow settled herself back into her basket and quickly fell asleep again.

Several days had passed and Snow was out of food and water. She was hungry and thirsty. Having scratched at the front door and jumping up at the windows, trying to let herself out of the house, she finally managed to make a hole in the back door where Jack had partially repaired it. At first the hole was too small but she scratched harder and then pushing her way through the hole she found herself on the back porch.

It was cold outside. The ground was covered with snow and there was a slight wind with a chill.

Exhausted from scratching her way through the door, Snow snuggled up on the rag mat that was against the wall and once again fell asleep.

When Snow next opened her eyes it was daylight. She was cold and hungry. She tried to get back through the hole in the door but was unable to. Wandering around the outside of the house, to the front door, Snow barked and scratched and jumped at the door, trying to get her owners’ attention. She wanted to get inside where it was warm … and her food bowls were in there.

Not having any success at the front door Snow headed for the front gate. Attempting several times to jump over the gate she finally made it and began wandering aimlessly down the street. Her paws were hurting from the icy ground causing her to limp and she was feeling weaker after all the effort to get over the gate. Seeing a thicket of blackberry bushes Snow limped toward them. Huddling close to the thicket she once again fell asleep.

The sound of children playing woke her but she was too weak to bark.

    CHAPTER THREE

It was sometime later, the snow having long melted, the weather having lost its chill and the afternoon sun not giving off much warmth that Snow watched as the man settled the young girl in the wheelchair, beside the thicket.

Gale was seven years old and had spent most of her young life not being able to walk on her own.

As her father turned toward the car he assured his daughter that she would be safe while he helped her mother with the picnic basket.

As she watched her father walking toward the car she called out, I love you Mummy and Daddy.

Adjusting her wheelchair even closer to the thicket, Gale heard a soft whimper. She moved closer still to the thicket. Seeing the dog huddled close to the thicket she squealed, Mummy! … Daddy!

The sudden squeal from their daughter had both parents hurry toward her, thinking that she had been hurt. Her mother reaching her first, gasped, Are you hurt, Gale?

No Mummy. Pointing in the direction of Snow, Gale shouted excitedly, The dog!

Her father was standing close to where Snow lay near the thicket, thinking that the poor animal was dead, he said, We will have to report the poor thing to the pound.

Seeing Snow’s tail wag, Gale exclaimed, It is not dead!

Looking first at her mother and then her father, Gale pleaded, Couldn’t we look after it … Please! … Mummy? Her mother
