    Sharpen Your Blade

Since a dull axe requires great strength, sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.

    —Ecclesiastes 10:10 (NLT)

The aforementioned scripture highlights an interesting concept that I came across while I was having my daily devotion. As I read, I couldn’t help but notice this verse similar to a neon sign blinking in the darkness of night masked in Solomon’s divinely-given perception of life. This priceless gem is screaming at us, telling the reader to simply sharpen your blade. Now for the average reader, you may be saying, Why in the world would I go out and buy a dull blade? In your most basic of thoughts you’d agree that buying a dull blade is a combined waste of artisanship, money, and is not a very good marketing strategy for a knife distributor. Of course no one would go out and purchase a dull blade (knife, axe, or otherwise) but a person might be more inclined to use a dull blade rather than be inconvenienced by the minimal effort it would take to simply get a used blade sharpened.

When you consider the concept of sharpening your blade, one must pay attention to the simple, yet profound, wisdom hidden in this phrase. A sharpened blade on any cutting instrument makes the tool perform at the highest level of the inventor’s intent. What we often miss when using tools is that they weren’t made to last forever and by frequent use any blade loses some of its edge. When the edge of the blade begins to dull, the user discovers that he’s working harder at a task that was once effortless when the blade had its original sharpness. The lesson here is that we must pay attention to the tools that we are using and become wiser about keeping them sharp. Lets’ take a look at applying this concept to your life. Get ready to put your big-boy and big-girl britches on!

Sharpening your blade can take on various personas and can be adapted to fit any situation that life presents. For example, if Helen the Homemaker decides to enter the work force again then she has to begin where she is. She has to sets goals based on her current position and then decide what she can do, what she’s willing to do, and what may not be the best thing for her to do at this juncture in her life. Has she disqualified herself? Absolutely not, but
