About this ebook

Why Not Me? tells what most doctors don't share. Cases of kidney failure are skyrocketing worldwide, and rates of treatment for kidney failure are growing faster than the population. It costs Medicare more for medical treatment than prostate cancer and breast cancer combined, forcing many people to choose conservative management not to treat kidney failure with dialysis or a transplant. Why Not Me? empowers you to take an active role in your health care and explain why reducing your dependence on medications can improve your overall health. It also helps you how to read and understand your lab results if your doctor orders blood or urine test; everything on the lab test result is important even though doctors never cover all the results. What should you do when your health-care provider tells you not to worry about a medical problem that is slightly higher or lower than normal? Learn the understanding or how dishonesty with your care team could hurt you; it will shock you once you reveal that most of the information given by your health team are for treatment only; most instructions are wellness and are the opposite from preventative treatment. Why Not Me? is written with the authority of himself and with the help of the results of others who chose to take an active role in their health care and those that chose prevention. Why Not Me? is based on WallACE's compassion that come from his own experience and while answering questions that most don't know how to ask. You will learn what to ask doctors, how to choose the right medications and herbs, and how to enrich while maintaining a healthy life. In addition, you will learn personal responsibility and never ask, "Why me?" The sad reality is if you don't know or don't properly care for yourself, you will say, "Why not me!" No one can keep you healthy other than you!

Imagine What the World Would Be Like Without Prevention

Virginia’s Former Governor Terry McAuliffe, Commonwealth of Virginia. And Sandra L. Green, who has taken every step with me and giving me the strength to put my words and the testimonial of those suffering from chronic kidney disease in writing.

    Acknowledgments

Many people influenced me in writing this book. In 2017, I received the Governor’s Volunteerism Award, and it gave me great encouragement. The ones that touched me the most were the increasing number of children and seniors I’ve met who require dialysis or are in need of kidney transplants. Many of them had no idea they were at risk, and if only they had received a kidney screening and had more knowledge of prevention, this could have been avoided. Imagine the precious little darling passing away before they had an opportunity to live or your loved one dying from a preventable disease. In many cases, improper eating had a lot to do with these individuals ending up in dialysis. There were many military members, veterans, and civilians, of all ages and ethnic groups, who mention their reason for kidney failure was due to overuse of medication prescribed by their doctors. It is my hope that this book can help prevent more incidents like these.

In addition, I’d like to acknowledge my wife, my friend, my caregiver, Sandra. Other influential leaders and friends have given me the encouragement I’ve needed to write this book and empowered my thinking. I would like to extend a special thanks to Judy Anderson, director of Norfolk’s Sickle Cell Associate, and Loretta Kahn, founder and editor of Hampton Roads, Virginia’s community nonprofit newspaper, who inspired me to never give up when the going got tough.

Special thanks go out to Ellen Sudderth of Poetry, my unofficial promoter. Without the seven years of encouragement reminding me there are others needing the information that has help individuals in the Hampton Roads area avoid dialysis. Because my message was limited to the Hampton Roads area, Ellen inspired me to provide a self-help guide to reach the thousands of individuals with risk factors that I was unable to reach but needed chronic kidney disease prevention information.

Ellen Annunziata, RN, clinical manager, and Leslie Guzman, LPN, hemodialysis instructor at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth dialysis unit, you were the spark that lit the fire in me to take an active role in my health care. If it wasn’t for the training and instruction you gave us patients, we would be like most others in dialysis wards across the country, receiving treatment without understanding why. Despite all the questions I asked as a patient, you never lost your cool and went about your duty with such loving care. I appreciate all that you have done for me. The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth dialysis unit does more than just offer treatments; it’s second to none. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for educating and caring for me. I owe a lot to you and the staff. It’s because of your heartfelt caring and remarkable nursing skills that I have received many awards and educated hundreds of people on self-management to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease. I give full credit for the service I offer military members, veterans, and the public and this book to you and the care team.

I will always appreciate the late Willie Wilson, my friend and the co-founder of Health & Awareness This self-help book is dedicated to the passion he had to raise awareness help diabetes avoid chronic kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, loss of limbs. His widow Loretta Wilson volunteer with Health & Awareness and keeps Willie’s legacy and dream alive. 84 Forming a non-profit organization to raise 85 awareness to help others avoid dialysis and kidney transplants, and decrease the numbers of unnecessary, early preventable deaths was our purpose. Willie passed away January 2011, the month of our very first prevention of chronic kidney disease health fair event. We love you, man – Rest peacefully. Your work has gone to a good cause and is very much alive in the lives Health & Awareness save every day.

    Preface

I am a disabled Vietnam–Desert Storm veteran. At one point in my life, I was prescribed more than eighteen different types of medication that I took on a daily basis. I am a two-time survivor of cancer, and I received dialysis for over eight years and underwent two kidney transplants and over twenty-six surgeries.

While I was taking all the different medications, I began to experience fatigue, confusion, memory loss, and other symptoms that gradually made daily life more difficult. Most of the changes happened without me noticing. I would sleep when I wanted to be awake and lie awake when I should be sleeping. At this time, I also noticed that medications were the most heavily advertised products on TV, the Internet, and radio and in magazines. And like most people that are experiencing human suffering, I fell for the ads. I was convinced that all I needed was another pill, often to control the side effects of the medications I was already taking. In the meantime, the side effects continued to mount up, requiring the doctor to prescribe more medication.

The best thing that could have happen to me was to realize I held the key to these medical problems, and if I wanted to go on, I needed a plan. I started reading and doing my own research, not to practice medicine but to educate myself on my own health. I started planning to live, because at the rate I was going, I was just preparing to die. I began to have questions for my doctors, started taking part in my personal treatment plan, and altered my lifestyle and eating habits— in other words, I began to take an active role in my health care. I started a self-management program.

Once I understood what my body needed and started eating the right foods, I noticed that my body was healing itself. Within time, my attitude on life changed. I regained my desire to be more active and associate with people and found myself
