    Money Tools - Brian Powers

    Chapter 1

    Introduction

Who I am is not as important as the global issue I want to talk about in this book. What you should know about me is that I have been where you are: growing up in an educational system and society that did not prepare me for adulthood in regards to money. As early as I can remember, money has been a part of my growing up, and many of you may be able to relate to this fact. An important element or tool that is missing in education—especially about the thoughts and beliefs of money—is how to use it properly, what should I know about money, and how money should make me feel. These are all questions that you may or may not have had but should have the desire to know. As to who I am, I am a concerned person, father, and mentor who wants not only my daughter to have the tools for financial success, but every young adult that realizes there is something more and wants to learn how to manage their finances so they can reach financial freedom.

Another important factor is knowing my purpose, and T. Harv Eker states it best, The purpose of our lives is to add value to the people of this generation and those that follow. That is what I desire for this book and the courses to follow. I want to help others in reaching their dreams, and if you have to worry about money, then you will lose focus and sight of your dreams or purpose.

Who is this book for? Primarily young adults starting to face the financial challenges of life—such as owning a car, living on their own, going off to college—but also for those parents that want to improve their financial situation by changing their habits and learning the skills required to do such. Currently the average total debt for a four-year college student is $35,200 for the class of 2013 graduates and is rising each year according to CNNMoney. And what is worse is most of the graduates will spend the next seven to ten years paying off the debt or spend the rest of their lives under this burden. The exciting fact is this book is not about debt or debt management. It is about learning the skills and techniques to create wealth, financial management, and achieving financial freedom. Why it is important? You may ask yourself, why is it important for me to understand money? It doesn’t matter; you get it, you spend it.

Well, let me tell you, that way of thinking will keep you poor and struggling to get it, because such thinking is a good reason to want to learn the techniques and skills to build wealth. Mike Todd expressed, I’ve never been poor, only broke. Being poor is a frame of mind. Being broke is only a temporary position.

Another reason is fear: fear of being poor, unsuccessful, not living up to your dreams, fear of getting a lot of money and not keeping it.

As Harper Hill states, Fear is an acronym for ‘False Evidence Appearing Real.’ The best way to get over fear is to gain understanding. If you understand something, you won’t fear it. I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear (Nelson Mandela). More importantly than the previous whys are our dreams. Each of us has a dream or had a dream. All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up in the day to find it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible (T.E. Lawrence).

For you to be successful in anything, you have to take action. Life is about daring to dream—abundance, freedom, and dominion. This is powerful because you daring to dream gives you freedom and dominion in your mind. You can see yourself somewhere else, doing something else, and living some other way. You first have to think it and then have faith and belief in that thought, which turns into an idea. It’s the idea of what you want to do that will make your dream come true. You are a special person, the Great Creator made you special and unique than anyone else.

If you wrote a song and you died before you finished it, the song would go unfinished because no one else would know how to finish it. Yes, they may or could add their uniqueness, but it wouldn’t be your song and how you would’ve composed it. Because you’re special, you can do abundant things. When you hear people talk about someone great like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, they are considered great not because of them being
