The Ordinary Basketball Coach's Guide to Building a Better Program
()
About this ebook
If you are a high school basketball coach, you are probably just like me. Most of my life I attended clinic after clinic listening to famous college coaches tell me about their programs. I purchased books and read as many philosophies as a young man could read. I watched so many hours of video. I knew offense and defense as good as any coach in my field but wasn't really getting the results I wanted. But then I realized my approach was totally wrong. I don't have the talent pool the college coaches have at all. Most of my players were home grown ordinary athletes straight from my own elementary schools. That's when I began to streamline my own personalized program. My program would fit my needs and the needs of my student athletes. It would not only make me happy, but it would keep me excited about the game of basketball. So, what did I do? I developed a book that could help the ordinary coach find his own philosophy. Inside you will find snippets that will not only keep you enthused about the game, but it will remind you of what is important in the day to day operations of your own program. Look inside and remind yourself why you love the great game of basketball.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to some of the greatest coaches in my life. Special thanks to Mike Gunther, Jeff Spaulding, Bob Jordan, and my brother Wendelll Scarbrough for teaching me about sports, positive speak, loyalty and the love of the game.
Prologue
I should write a book. At least that is what I thought. My writing background will make it easy. Are you allowed to write laughing out loud
in a book? I mean LOL. This book has been a start-and-stop operation for the last two years. I have something to say, but saying it is a whole different thing altogether.
My basketball coaching career started in 1986. Back then I knew everything about basketball. It is now 2018, and I realize every year that I know nothing at all. I am always learning, and despite a huge amount of wins, I feel pretty ordinary.
Every year I read a book to get fired up for the season. It has been my tradition since 1986. I wish I could mention every book, but I truly loved them all. Each book gave me a snippet that I used during my season. I guess that’s why I wrote this book. I want someone to get a snippet from me. Yep! That is the only reason I have at this point. It’s all about the snippets.
Before we start, I am going to apologize. I am sorry. My personal experience has made me a pretty good coach. At least people tell me I am a pretty good coach. Anyway, I just want you to know what you are about to experience. I am going to jump back and forth, like a rabbit, between my current philosophy and my childhood. Hopefully, the snippets will provoke some thought as it pertains to your program. I pray it becomes a valuable read for you.
Snippet 1: Your basketball experience as a young person is invaluable as a positive and a negative. Take time to write down everything you liked and disliked about your basketball coaches. Combine it with your personality, mix it all together, and you have
