    He Didn’t See It Coming

On what was to be the most amazing day in his life, Jameson was devastated. He woke up with his longtime girlfriend in their apartment; she was in the shower, and he was getting ready to surprise her with a ring! He had it all planned out—where he’d hide the ring, how he would say it, what she would say; he was so excited! He followed his plan to every detail; then she got out of the shower to do some work, and he jumped in. When he got out, his life as he knew it was changed forever. He heard Amber talking on the phone and went to get dressed. When he came out to the living room, she was still on the phone; she didn’t hear him walk in. I’ll be there this afternoon. I told him I have appointment after work, so he knows I won’t be home until later. Yeah, I’m excited too. See you soon! She turned around to hang up the phone and came face-to-face with him. Jamie! You snuck up on me! Good morning, baby.

Jameson was a good-looking guy, about six feet, athletic build, and dark auburn hair, almost brown. He had light brown eyes that shined when he smiled and the longest lashes you’ve ever seen on a guy. Who were you talking to? he said.

Sarah from work. There’s a work file we have to get finished today.

He said, Really? Are you excited to see her this afternoon during your appointment?

She asked him, What are you talking about?

He said, I heard you on the phone, what you said. You’re meeting someone today, that you lied to me about being home later. What’s going on Amber?

Oh my god, I can explain! I’m so sorry, you weren’t supposed to find out this way, she said.

    Find out what? he said.

I was gonna talk to you this weekend, but I guess now will have to do. I’m so sorry, Jamie. I never wanted to hurt you.

When it was all over, she had left with some of her stuff in a bag; she wasn’t coming back. He was numb, angry, and crushed. He couldn’t believe what had just happened, everything she said to him. How could he have not known anything, not a clue; he never suspected a thing. She told him she didn’t love him like she used to, that she liked having an open relationship; it’s why she was able to stay with him. But he didn’t know she was having an open relationship. He thought they had been a couple, exclusive for a long time. She never said she wasn’t happy. How do you go from planning to ask the woman you love to marry you, to being single, alone and heartbroken, in one day? With a bottle of Bourbon, a sick day from work, and your buddies, that’s how. Jameson makes the call to his friend Richard and explains what happened.

After a lengthy list of expletives as a description for what she did, Rich tells him, Dude, forget her. She’s not worth it. Let’s go out, get some drinks, force her out of your head. I bet I can set you up with a real knockout! Jameson wasn’t looking for a replacement; the last thing he wanted was to date someone today,
