In Loving Memory of Louise Ashford
For the glory of God
The year 2015 was a year of realizing God’s true love, true forgiveness, true power, and redemption . Prior to this year, God has always been with me; you see God has a purpose for me (for all of us) and nothing can change that, not even us.
In 1980 I was living a life of my own selfishness—not for the Lord at all—although I was brought up in the church mom made sure we were on the Sunday school bus almost every week. Back in 1980 I had a boyfriend who sold drugs. I was very spoiled and wanted for nothing—so spoiled that everything had to go my way. In 1991 I met who I thought was the love of my life. He was married, and I thought he was going to leave his wife because we got along so well. We traveled, he paid all my bills, and he bought me a new car every year, but of course he’d take advantage of me at times and that made me wake up so to speak. Even though I wanted for nothing, I still felt empty inside. So I started watching church on TV on Sunday mornings in Garden Grove, California, conducted by Dr. Robert Schuller for about three weeks, and one beautiful Sunday morning, I asked JESUS to come into my life, and he did.
The Lord then led me to Elim Baptist Church where I still attend today; this was in 1996. I attended Elim for a while, and Pastor Charles Oliver was the pastor at the time. He pastored Elim for thirty years and he was the only African American pastor to pastor Elim. Elim was all Swedish when Pastor Charles Oliver was invited to pastor the church. Now we have Pastor Armad Collins, and he’s doing a great job. When I first joined the church, I joined the choir and the usher board of which now I’m chairperson. During this time I started beginners class in Sunday school, and I did my first class for three years and I loved it because you can ask questions, and my zeal for the Lord was exciting for me—the more I learned, the more I wanted to know more.
I started watching Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, and they have some great classes on building your faith. Anything I could find to feed me spiritually I took it in, and then I watched The 700 Club and found out how to give to people and children around the world, and here in America, giving is so important. I’ll talk about that later. So I was taking it all in, and people would tell me about these ministries, and you know I agree with Paul on working out your own salvation. They say they claim and believe it, and I don’t care about this kind of thinking. I know all things work to the good for those of us who love the Lord—what man may mean for evil God turns it into good.
On a New Year’s Day, I started reading the Bible beginning with Genesis and Matthew of the Old and New Testaments, respectively. At this time, it is my fourth year in doing so. Did you know the books of the Bible goes right along with each other? I get so much out of it, it overwhelms me. God truly speaks through his word and his prophets. God’s word is faith-building; it’s assurance, it’s truth, and it’s life or death to those of us who believe the truth. JESUS is the author, the middler, and the finisher of our faith and sometimes in everyday living; you have to stand on God’s promises. God’s timing is always the best. The closer you walk with the Lord, it seems like the more storms of life comes up, but that’s okay because with JESUS we have victory over the world; our faith is the reason why we have to stay in the word daily. The word builds you up for the storms of life, so when they come, you are built up and full of God’s armor to withstand the wiles of the evil one. With the word daily feed your spirit so that your spirit grows up into a mature spirit.
In 2014, I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer; right away I told the doctor that by his stripes I am healed. I am a child of the Most High God and JESUS is the name above all names even cancer cannot destroy (this is where the title for this book came from).
The doctor looked at me and said, I love your spirit.
The next thing I knew we were talking about her friend, and we started talking about the Lord and his word. I told her to pray for her friend and to have faith in God. Isn’t that awesome how God used me for his testimony to witness to that doctor at that time? God is awesome!
Chemo
My chemo classes started, and they gave us books of phone numbers and a binder full of resources. The nurse explained all the side effects of chemo, and I’m sitting there thinking, I’m not going through all that in JESUS’S name.
I’m terrified of needles. Thank God for lidocaine cream I never felt any pain, and to show you how good God is, my sister and her team were the
