About this ebook

Caribbean Sounds of Poetry by Sanaa appeals to a general audience. It focuses on the vast reservoir that the Caribbean shares with other countries. It includes local poems of the United States, Jamaica, and other South Caribbean countries. One poem which I especially like is “Ode to an Autumn’s Leaf.”

Caribbean Sounds of Poetry - Sanaa

    Paragraphs

Set me as a seal upon thine heart

As a seal upon thine arm

For love is strong as death

Jealousy as cruel as the grave

The coal thereof are coals of fire

Which hath a most vehement flame.

    Nesta Marley’s Song

    No Woman, No Cry

    Just Free

    October 3, 1981

    On Saturday while remembering

the Californian life. My first landing

    in California.

    Gay spirits

    Heart free

    Running round

    In California

    With palm trees

    Reaching to the skies

    Like coconut trees

    Where lizards climb

    In Jamaica

    Trees standing taller than high-risers

    With Brown Mountains and fair

    People

    Filling the atmosphere

    With Jamaica

    And Africa

    Right there in California.

    And my hand reaches out

    To touch

    Your gold dust

    And Spanish palms

    With Indian buttered corn

    Taking the gas

    From my stomach

And filling me with the memories

    Of Candlelit Catholic churches

    Where brothers and sisters

    Embrace after fellowship

    Filling each other

    With the holy kiss

    Only in California

    Have I seen this.

    It makes me glad

    To see your rooftops

    Serenading your pleasant skies

    And children playhouse

    In your Goodyear Air taxis

    Where poverty vanishes

And limbos on its own sleds

    Arising if necessary

    But maybe temporarily

    For if there is tomorrow

The bread is shared with hope

    That everyone digests

Filling each with the recipe of health

    For if there is tomorrow

    And there is health

    There is California.

    Sanaa

    Here I Come

    Year 1983

    California!

    Here I come

    This time

    Beating my drum

    And bringing Jamaica

    From Trinidad

    Because Jamaica is your

    Brother

    And Trinidad your son
