    Foreword

As a pastor, preacher, teacher, evangelist, and Bible teacher, never have I enjoyed a book so much. This should be read by anyone who is a follower of Christ. We have been warned over and over by the Word of God to study and divide the word of truth. Not all that say, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of God. We must all study. I recommend that you start with this book.

—Les Bryan, retired pastor, evangelist, and teacher

    Chapter 1

    Immortality versus Death

John was a hardworking man. He was a loving husband and proud father of two girls, ages fourteen and fifteen. Both were beautiful and outgoing, just like their mother.

Only in his midthirties, John had applied himself to learning his job and put extra effort into everything that he did. Without a college education, he felt lucky to have a good job in a factory and had risen to line manager at a plant that manufactured parts for equipment used in the oil patch.

A slip of the brakes on a forklift combined with a top heavy load of metal parts, and John’s work in this life ended.

Unfortunately, he had never been able to afford life insurance, and his beautiful wife now had to seek work to raise two fatherless teenagers. The best-paying job that she was able to find was as a waitress in a tavern. The tips were large, but the work was hard and the clientele harder. The two hormonally charged daughters delighted in dropping by to see their mom and catch a ride home with her at the end of her shift, flirting with the men at the bar.

John could see all of this from heaven and was growing quite concerned over events back on earth. He knew the dangers of such places and men. He had grown up on the rough side of town. He also grew angry at the men who took the liberty of slapping his beautiful wife’s derriere and her becoming accustomed to its occurrence.

The teenagers grew bolder in their dress, or lack thereof, not having a father to shut that behavior down. They lived with a continuously exhausted mother who lacked the energy to argue. John grew more desperate and anxious each day as he witnessed the changes taking place in his family’s life.

One night, the girls dressed very provocatively, and the clients were more inebriated than usual and disaster happened. The nightmare that ensued included the rape and murder of his two daughters. This eventually resulted in his wife committing suicide as she took all of the blame for what had happened.

John was living in hell now, not heaven.

Ted, on the other hand, was an outgoing, carefree soul who liked to play, not work. His devil-may-care attitude and rowdiness seemed to attract most of the girls who secretly loved the bad-boy type.

He worked only enough to party hard on weekends and never gave a thought about the future. His kind are touted in beer commercials the world over. Not really bad, not really serious, totally irreligious. However, this was a rebellion against the way he had been raised by a serious, prayer-minded mother.

Ted lived a profligate way without a care, unconcerned about anyone—until one moment he was strolling down a street; the next an unattended toddler staggered across his path and into the lanes of traffic. Without a moment’s hesitation, Ted rushed into the street and shoved the child to safety between parked cars. Screeching tires, screaming onlookers, and the sickening thud of body against a moving mass ended Ted’s time on earth.

Unlike John, Ted’s default was straight to hell where he commenced burning while waiting for the judgment. After a hundred years, the tribunal was set, and Ted was judged. It was determined that his selfless act in saving the child overturned his profligate life before this. His heart must have been in the right place all along to respond like this.

So Ted was retrieved from his burning place and installed in heaven. Was Ted happy over the reprieve or angry at burning the hundred years only
