An excellent book in helping us learn to follow and trust God in practical ways.

Profound in its simplicity, and simple yet profound best describes this work of the Lord through Evelyn Lang. Walking in the Spirit is an easy read written in the everyday conversational-like language. Speaking from her spiritual encounters and supported by scripture, the author covers the discerning, managing and nurturing of Spiritual Gifts. This book can be an excellent resource to the Church in the areas of understanding and exercising basic disciplines of the faith i.e. Prayer; study of the Word; rhythms of the spiritual journey (mountain top moments, valley lows and desert experiences); the Deeper-Life and Spiritual Gifts. What a benefit this teaching would be to new and never discipled believers.

Introduction
God has given everyone gifts. Even before I became a Born-Again Christian, I knew that God gave people certain natural talents and abilities. However, after I started going to a Holy Spirit–filled church, I also became aware of spiritual gifts. I wanted these gifts too and started asking God to let me hear His voice and also for Him to use me as His vessel. It has been quite an adventure—and not always easy—as I learned that growth has to go right alongside with gifts. You can’t have one without the other.
As I look back over the years to the first time I stepped out in faith with a word of healing, I am amused at how little I knew and amazed at how patient God was with me. I didn’t want to do anything of my flesh and was very insecure about speaking out. What if I made a mistake? Would God be mad at me? How could I be sure it was Him Who was speaking to me?
When I first started hearing God, I asked Him who or what situation He wanted to heal. The words came, and then just as quickly came the doubts. I kept asking, even as time went on, Is this You Lord?
Finally, after many weeks and maybe even months of asking this every time I got a word, all of a sudden, I heard the words of response to me in my mind, "Well, who did you ask?"
I had to chuckle as those words made everything so simple. God has a sense of humor! Sometimes we complicate things, and sometimes we let the enemy put fear in us. Either way, it prevents us from speaking what God tells us. Of course, we don’t want to do anything of our flesh—or speak lightly or irresponsibly. We want to be responsible. However, we also can’t be paralyzed with fear of making a mistake.
We do our responsible best and speak with humility, telling the receiver to test the word. God will usually use us to confirm something the person already knows. If it’s a healing word, we will see fruit. Jeremiah 32:6–8 shows us that even the prophet Jeremiah wasn’t sure at all times, that it was God speaking to him. Learning isn’t always easy—in fact, it usually never is. We all have some growing pains.
I pray that this book will help answer questions that you may have as well as encourage you to step out into all that God has for you as His vessel.

Obedience
Rainfall Starts with One Drop
Everything starts with obedience. When God gave me my first word of healing, I had a choice—do I step out and speak it or do I let fear come in? It seems to be an easy decision, but I wrestled with it all through our worship service at church. As I look back on it now, I have to laugh at my insecurity, but I am also amazed at the patience God had with me. I tell this story to you now because many of you may be able to relate to it, even though it is somewhat embarrassing to me to have questioned God as I did.
I had asked God for a word of healing that Sunday morning. I had been getting words of prophecy for some time but never a word of healing. God had put in my heart a desire for people to be healed. When I asked God for a word, immediately I heard, If I give you a word, will you speak it, even if you don’t know of anyone who has it?
The church I attended was very small, and everyone knew each other well. I responded that, yes, as long as I knew it was God and not my flesh, I would speak it. The word eye came to mind right away. I then reasoned that I could have thought of that myself, so I asked God if I could have something more specific about the eye.
Instantly, fluid build-up came to mind. Well, that was pretty specific, so I went on to ask if there was anything else God wanted to heal. Again, the word came—knee. And again, I reasoned, Well, I could have thought of that myself, so I asked if there was something specific so that I would know it was not me thinking it. Immediately, I got cartilage. Most people would have gone on to speak it but not me. The doubts started coming in. What if I made a mistake? Would God be mad at me? What if I were doing this out of my flesh because the words did come in my mind? So, I said to God that if it were Him speaking to me, to please confirm it by having our pastor say something about healing. (What chutzpa!)
Within minutes, a man on the worship team began talking about how God wants to heal. Did I take this as confirmation? Not me. I said, "Lord, I asked that if it were You speaking to me, that the pastor would have a word, not someone else, so I’m still not sure if it is You I am hearing. Please have Pastor say it." Again, the man on the worship team talked about healing. So, again, I asked God to have Pastor say it.
This time, our pastor did. How did I respond? I said, But, Lord, I don’t know of anyone here with these problems!
All of a sudden, I heard, Didn’t you tell Me that you would speak it even if you didn’t think anyone had it?
My heart must have skipped a beat as I went forward with the word. As I spoke it, a man in the congregation confirmed the word, and someone’s knee was healed that very service. Another person came up for fluid build-up in the eyes.
God is so kind to us. He knows us better than we know ourselves, for I didn’t realize that I would have had such fear and doubt come in and need such confirmations. However, even though I needed a big push, God helped me to be obedient. And since then, He has been teaching me and helping me grow in the gifts He’s given me.
Did I get confidence right away? No! There are times when I still struggle when I get a word I don’t understand and try to reason it out. But I am doing much better. I have learned to follow my heart, for the Lord lives in it. I try not to let fear, or my reasoning, lead me.
