    Scene 1

Jean is in the kitchen washing dishes. The phone rings. She goes to answer it.

    Jean. Hello.

    Laura. He won’t sign.

Jean. What do you mean? He has to sign.

Laura. He won’t sign. He imagines that there is all this money in his father’s estate, and so he won’t sign the papers for his grandmother.

Jean. But those were his grandmother’s wishes—to be cremated.

Laura. I know. He is the most horrible person on the face of the earth.

Jean. Have his brother go talk to him. After all, she is their grandmother.

Laura. His brother wants nothing to do with him.

Jean. Why am I not surprised?

Laura. Listen, can you go talk to him? We are both working.

    Jean. Well…uh…sure…okay.

    Laura. Thanks so much.

Jean. Bye (hangs up the phone).

    Scene 2

    Scene: Jail

On one side of the stage is a small prison cell. Howie is lying on his back in bed, with his leg crossed in the air. He’s reading a magazine. A guard approaches the cell. On the other end of the stage is the visiting area with a table and chair. There is an American flag on the wall. Jean sits and waits at the table.

Guard. Hey there, you have a visitor.

Howie, sits up quickly, tosses the magazine to the floor. Oh yeah? Who is it?

    Guard. A lady.

Howie. A lady? (Starts to adjust his clothes and straighten up his hair. Starts to act all arrogant.)
