About the Author
Introduction
We lived in ecstasy as if there was no tomorrow. We weren’t your every day vampires you hear about in movies or books. Our blood was semi-warm and we were awake in the daylight. Some of us even had day jobs. We craved one another’s blood. We never hunted in the dark for human flesh. We were unusual. When I was first created I didn’t know if there were others like us? I didn’t know if traditional vampires existed? I remember the flow of hot blood flooded my body and I knew at that time, I wanted my best friends to be part of this new creation. It was insane to crave blood at first. The first person’s blood you tasted you became dependant on them for survival, until you were ready to feed on others. I could only feed on Tim, my creator. That’s how I was created. We were hippies of the nontraditional vampire cult. We loved our family, until the tragedy happened and threatened to destroy our community.
Chapter 1
The Beginning
I didn’t choose to be a creature, although, I accepted the life as part of my destiny. I didn’t understand anything at first. We lived in the city of New Orleans where I grew up. One night at The Dark Club while I celebrated my 21st birthday with my best friends I was introduced to Tim, Jonathon’s lover. We had never met him. He was tall, handsome and quiet. He seemed passive, but in control. Jonathon whispered in my ear,
You want to feel like this all of the time?
Jonathon asked.
Of course I do.
I said and looked at my two best friends, Lisa and Joey.
We can make you young forever.
Jonathon whispered. I couldn’t imagine what would make us young forever.
I don’t think they make a pill that would do that!
I said and laughed. I was the youngest of my friends. Jonathon was twenty five and mentioned Tim was in his thirties.
Tim has a secret.
Jonathon said and he put a pill on my tongue. He gave one to Lisa. We loved to drink and get high on love pills
. We always went to the same club and partied. Tim’s eyes sparkled. I went up to Tim and whispered in his ear,
What’s your secret to keeping us young?
I asked and felt attracted to Tim’s beauty and his quiet mannerism.
Why don’t you come home with us and I will show you?
He asked. I confess I was a little tipsy and not in my right mind when I agreed. I had been on my own for years; I could hear my inner voice inside, not a good idea. But I was curious and a part of me wanted to know. I walked up to the bar and told Lisa.
That is not a good idea.
She said.
I know, but it’s my birthday and Jonathon will be with me.
I said and finished my drink.
I’m coming with you.
Lisa said.
I love you, but you weren’t invited.
I said and she nudged me.
I’m still going with you.
She said and I did my potty dance.
I have to pee. Are you coming?
I asked. She was not amused.
I will let you do that on your own.
She said. I turned around and she hit me on my butt. Joey met up with us and took my hand.
I’ll tell him what’s going on. He looks confused.
Lisa said.
You do that.
I said.
As I came out of the bathroom stall, Tim surprised me as he pushed me up against the wall, he kissed me hard. He took my wrist and I followed him out. No words were spoken, but my heart raced. I didn’t know what to think. He found Jonathon and whispered something in his ear and escorted me outside. I looked behind me and saw Lisa and Jonathon hand in hand. Joey was nowhere to be found. Outside the air felt warm and humid. I looked again to make sure I could see Lisa behind me. Our eyes met. We both felt hesitant. Reality set in. We walked to a gun metal SUV and Jonathon opened the door for us. We crawled in with a nervous giggle. When Jonathon got in, we heard loud club music from the car radio.
The SUV pulled up to a driveway and stopped. It was a big bungalow surrounded by two huge oak trees. It was dark and looked creepy. We got out and walked to the front porch. I held Lisa’s hand tight. Tim took my hand and separated us. He put his arm around me as he unlocked the door and we went inside. He let me go and dimmed the lights. The interior was modern. Lisa and I walked around. We heard more club music. Tim was at the bar.
I don’t have any neighbors. We can be as loud as we want.
Tim said and smiled. He handed us drinks. Jonathon gave Lisa another pill.
Let’s toast to a new beginning.
Jonathon said. Lisa and I looked at each other. We toasted in agreement. Tim took my glass and pulled me away from Lisa. She reached out to take my hand, but Jonathon stopped her. Fear set into our eyes.
What’s going on?
I asked frightened. I didn’t want to move. The drink began to affect me and everything slowed down. I became victim to the little pills mixed in my drink.
Don’t be frightened Terry, I’ll be back.
Jonathon said and held Lisa.
He’s going to take her home.
Tim whispered.
Oh no, we came together and we will leave together.
Lisa announced and tried to get closer to me.
Don’t worry, you’re pretty head off, we’ll take good care of her.
Tim said.
Tim will look after her, Lisa.
Jonathon said. That didn’t reassure us.
We don’t know him. I’m not going to leave my best friend with a stranger.
Lisa said hesitant to leave.
He’s not a stranger Lisa, he’s my lover.
Jonathon said and they left. I remembered we ended up in Tim’s bedroom. He tried to give me another pill, but I refused it.
I can’t.
I said.
This won’t interact with anything. Relax.
He said and I took it. I felt like Jell-O- and fell backwards onto a soft bed full of pillows and a white duvet blanket.
I don’t know you.
I said.
You will.
He said and began to caress my body and kissed my arms. He kissed me harder on the mouth than he did at the club. He pulled out a knife from his blazer and I fought him. He laughed while I tried to get away from his grasp.
I don’t do things like that. I’m not into s&m. Please don’t hurt me. Jonathon wouldn’t like it if he came back and I was dead.
I said and held his arm.
It’s not for you it’s for me.
He said. Startled I watched him take off his blazer and unbutton his shirt with one hand. His other hand held me down. In horror, I watched him cut himself deep.
Taste it.
He said. I watched the blood ooze out of his well toned abs. He held my face and pushed my head towards the cut. My stomach turned with nausea. I heard a noise close by and saw Jonathon next to us.
Has it happened yet?
Jonathon asked.
It’s happening.
Tim answered.
Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you Terry; we’ve been friends along time. Now, you will see what I am. Taste his blood with me.
Jonathon said and we tasted his blood together. At that moment I turned into a creature of the night.
You will be one of us.
Tim said. What did that mean? I demanded answers.
Is this a cult?
I asked.
No, it’s amazing we can do anything we want as long as we’re fed from Tim’s blood. He will take care of you and you will live with us.
Jonathon said elated.
Live with you?
I asked. This was way too fast for me. I didn’t even know Tim.
Both of your parents are dead and Lisa won’t mind if you move in with us.
Jonathon said thrilled that I had become like them. My parents had both died in a car wreck when I was thirteen, and Lisa’s parents had taken me in. We had grown up as sisters. We even rented an apartment together in college.
Jonathon? You’re a couple?
I asked.
This is different.
Jonathon said and fixed his shirt. He offered me a glass of wine and I took a sip. I propped up on the pillows to get more comfortable.
We will stay forever young.
Tim said.
Are you vampires?
I asked and felt euphoria after the rush of blood had entered my body.
We don’t consider ourselves vampires-
Jonathon said.
Not yet.
Tim said and chuckled. I didn’t care what that meant. I felt intrigued.
Will I crave blood forever?
I asked curious about this mysterious creature I had turned into.
You will only crave my blood.
Tim whispered and got up.
Where is he going?
I asked tired. My veins felt warm with the new blood in my body.
He likes to smoke cigars. You have to convince Lisa and Joey so we can all be together as a family.
Jonathon said. After my first taste I wanted Lisa and Joey to be part of this. We were already a family and did everything together. We could hang out at The Dark Club and have our blood feasts. How did I miss Jonathon as a creature? I felt proud that Tim wanted me to be like him. I could hear my heart pound inside my head.
Okay, I’ll move in with you. I do want Lisa and Joey to be part of this. Then, I won’t feel alone.
I said. My mind raced with possibilities.
You will never be alone because you will be with us forever. You will live in our home. Lisa and Joey will feed off each other and me.
Jonathon said. I couldn’t believe I felt as though I was part of a family. We fed all night. I was connected to them forever. The next day I was sick. I found myself wrapped around a toilet and crouched down in only a Tee shirt. I felt Jonathon rub my back. I had been sick for hours.
She’s going to be fine.
I heard Tim say.
I think we need to take her to the Institution.
Jonathon said concerned about the change of my blood.
She’s dry heaving. She needs to eat.
Tim said. It made me nauseas to think about food. He started to name off eggs, bacon and I started to gag more. Jonathon got a wet towel and put it over my sweaty forehead.
She has a fever.
Jonathan said.
I’m telling you we all go through the blood transformation differently. It’s a process. You went through it too.
Tim said unconcerned.
Not like this.
Jonathon muttered under his breath.
I’m going to be okay?
I stammered.
You’re going to be fine, Terry. It’s just the new blood entering your body. I’ll be in the kitchen.
Tim said and walked away.
I’m so sorry, baby.
Jonathon said and wiped my mouth with a towel. He got up. I could hear their conversation.
You need to relax and not make her nervous about the change. Yes, hers is worse maybe; her body is taking a longer time to get used to the blood. We’re all different. It’s part of the virus.
Tim said. I got up and stumbled in to the kitchen. I grabbed on to the wall to help my balance.
You gave me a virus? Am I going to die?
I asked. I didn’t want my two friends to go through this. It felt like torture.
Everyone who tastes our blood receives the virus.
Tim said and brushed it off.
Am I a vampire, now that I crave blood? I’m going to end up killing Lisa and Joey.
I said and began to tear up. Tim seemed amused at my sadness.
You are going to be fine. You’re not a vampire, you’re a creature. You only crave my blood. That’s how I created you.
Tim said unworried about my condition.
You are his equal.
Jonathon said. None of this made since to me. What had I gotten myself into?
You need to eat so you can throw up. Don’t give her any milk. It will make her feel worse.
