A Few Steps Back
I didn’t know how to feel. It was as though I needed him, but I didn’t! I wanted him! It was the want that needed him, not me. I- who am I kidding, God I just needed to smell him. I just needed his eyes to be fixed on me one more time-just one more time. I needed the tips of his fingers to run down my thighs.
I mean he was perfect, perfectly himself. I wouldn’t and couldn’t change anything about him, and that’s why I had to walk away.
I was two years out of college, and I was just beginning my career! I had just gotten a new apartment and life seemed to be steady. I had a crazy previous two years, and I only wanted to have fun now. I was stuck between two things I loved. I wanted fun, freedom! I also wanted him, and everything he came with. I don’t know what about him entice me so much. I mean he was just like any other regular shmegular guy.
I just- I guess I need to begin from the beginning. Well, it all started at a birthday party in August, but let’s rewind things back about two months ago. Let’s go back to June.
June
Fun? Ha! What an understatement. I had a ball all summer Long. June bled with men.
Let’s see, there was: John (such a great kisser), Marco, Delaney (his last name, it was a military thing, and he was too aggressive ugh!), Ashar (his real name was Luke! He went to jail for all of two days, and decided he wanted to be a Muslim. In order to be a born again Muslim he said that he needed a Muslim name.
Apparently the name Ashar means One who has wisdom
. He named himself. Baby was as dumb as a box of rocks! Plus, I don’t think you’re supposed to name yourself. Isn’t some elder or something supposed to name you? He always spazzed when I called him Luke, so I called him Luke very often), Malik, Tony (short for Anthony, I lied and told him that I had a son. I’m pretty sure that he still believes that I have a son. It made for the perfect reason why I couldn’t go over to his place, and why he couldn’t ever come over to mine. He was a great texter though, just what I needed.).
Then there was Mosley. Mosley, Mosley, Mosley- June belonged to you! Where do I even begin?
Target! Let’s begin at my Target run. It was a Saturday afternoon, and I was buying groceries when I got a text.
Hey you! What happened? A month? We haven’t chilled in what, a month? 39966.png We should meet up soon 39968.png Texted Mosley.
It was true, we lost communication about two weeks ago (guys exaggerate, ugh). See what happened was…I play too much. Mosley is a grown man who doesn’t have time for my childish way.
Two weeks and a day ago to be exact, I was over Mosley’s house. The time couldn’t have been past one PM. He had wine, I had a wine cooler. We were talking about family duties, and how he had a Nigerian community meeting that he was supposed to be spear-heading tomorrow. He paused in mid conversation and just stared at me. I furrowed my brows and asked
What?
When you texted me, you said that you had a surprise for me. Where is my surprise?
Boy! The surprise is that I was coming over to drink with you.
Well, I have a surprise of my own for you.
Before I knew it, Mosley pressed up against me and began kissing me. I pulled away.
What’s the matter?
The matter is you need to ask me first! Send a sign or something.
Mosley was fine and all, but he was too aggressive. His approach was too blunt for me. I like gentle, tender affection. His aggressive nature, as well as a few other things, was the reason why we hadn’t had sex yet! I know this is what frustrated him.
"What’s tha- what happened? I asked, pointing to his shoulder.
He made a sort of frown as he moved his shirt to expose his left shoulder.
You mean this?
Yeah, what happened?
Car accident. Four others and myself were in an accident two years ago. Tragic, tragic, tragic accident. Three of us made it. My friend’s co-workers, Josiah and Sammy, were not as fortunate. There was so much glass. Glass cut though the flesh on my shoulder here, and my left side here, I can’t lie and say that I felt it. There was so much adrenaline rushing through me, I had no idea that anything was wrong. The stitches were somewhat uncomfortable though
I reached over to touch his scars that led from his hip to shoulder like a ladder. Once my fingertips reached the top of his shoulder, he placed his hand on top of mine. I shot him a smile.
So, the Nigerian Community thing? Why are you presenting? What is that all about?
He cleared his throat and answered, Everybody has a turn in presenting. The community acts as an organization that helps our fellow Nigerians enter into America. We are the Missouri chapter. We help them get jobs, education, healthcare if they need it. We help them transition into being citizens. I am also responsible for providing the food. Here, follow me.
I stood up and followed him from the living room to his kitchen. He opened up a few spice jars and motioned for me to smell them. There was a spice jar that held white powder that smelled awful. I sneezed and he laughed.
These are all of the spices that will be used for the food in the community meeting.
He placed all of the jars back into the cabinet. Once the last jar was being placed into the cabinet, I grabbed his hand and led him back to the sofa. He smiled and shook his head.
I sat in the corner of the sofa, the one nearest to the front door. He sat in the other corner, the one closest to the kitchen.
He leaned in once more, and I grabbed his chin. I slowly leaned in to kiss him, nibbling his lower lip, in hopes of him following my lead. He did, much more gently this time. He reached down to untie my denim cardigan. I let him. He led me from the living room to his bedroom. Before reaching the door, he held my hand into the air to
