The heat from the summer sun caused a storm to pass through the late-night hours but by morning, Megan awoke to birds singing and the sun peeking through an unending cloud-covered sky. Megan quickly went downstairs to the outside. Ever since she was a child, she loved waking up on a hot day and walking barefoot through the dewy soft grass. The cold sensation of the blades of grass between her toes tickled and made her smile.
Megan’s mother came downstairs and looked out the window at her teenaged daughter and couldn’t help but laugh. The simple things in life tend to bring us so much joy. Megan looked up and saw her mother by the window laughing, so she turned and began walking toward the door. She went inside and her mother was standing in the kitchen.
What?
Megan said. It’s fun!
she added with a smirk on her face.
I didn’t say anything,
replied her mother.
No, but you were thinking it. Besides, I remember a time when you were out there with me doing the exact same thing, and you are way older,
Megan said, joking.
Very true. Did you ever think I was disappointed that you didn’t wait for me?
Megan looked at her mom feeling a little guilty but then her mother began laughing. I am just teasing,
her mother said. And just so you know, I never want you to become too old to do these things. Never ever forget any of the special things you loved as a child.
Megan smiled as she glanced out the kitchen window thinking on years passed.
So what does my birthday girl want for breakfast? I am guessing the same as any other year—pancakes with strawberries and cream.
Please and thank you,
replied Megan as she ran upstairs to get dressed and begin her day.
When Megan came back downstairs, her mother had beautifully set the table with Megan’s breakfast prepared and served. Of course, she also had a vase of daisies in the center.
Thanks, Mom. This is so great! I couldn’t ask for anything more.
Megan sat down to eat and noticed a small box by the vase of daisies.
Is this for me? What is it?
asked Megan.
Megan’s mother sat down next to her. I guess you will have to open it and see.
Megan took the box and opened it. Inside was a beautiful gold locket with a flower resembling a daisy etched on the front of it. Megan held the locket in her hand admiring it.
That was the closest I could find on my travels for work of anything with a daisy.
Megan’s face filled with joy. It is perfect! Truly, thank you so much!
I thought now since you are older, I could get you something a little special, and you would surely take good care of it.
I promise. Thank you again so much.
Megan leaned over and gave her mom the biggest hug. I love it, and I am never taking it off.
You deserved something special, especially after all you did for Jonathan. I am so proud of you and love you so much.
I love you too,
replied Megan.
So how is Jonathan doing these days? Do you have plans to see him or Sara today?
"Well, this past Sunday after church ended, Miranda told us about the carnival that was being set up not far from here, about a thirty-minute buggy ride at most. Miranda said that her parents are taking her, so Sara went and asked her parents
