    Introduction

Ihave been a chef for thirty-five years. I am an expert at formulating recipes. I can take various ingredients and, using just the right techniques, create something tantalizing, tasty, and delicious—a culinary delight. It will surely bring satisfaction to your body, soul, and spirit. First, I must bring together all the necessary ingredients. With the perfect technique, I will produce the perfect meal called the light.

    Dear reader,

My intention in writing this book is to bring you a victorious outcome in your life and to describe the trials, tribulations, and challenges I have faced in reaching where I am today. My problems began before my birth and followed me throughout my adulthood. My story moves from darkness into the light very quickly—may it bring to you the very same outcome that I was blessed to receive.

    Sincerely agape,

    John

    Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I thank my heavenly Father, his Son Jesus Christ, and the blessed Holy Spirit for allowing me to come through this journey in my life.

To my wife, Sherry, who has endured this journey.

To the hardest-working woman I know, my beloved daughter, Maria. To my Sunshine Girl, Emma Isabella, Maria’s good fruit.

To my dearest of friends Roger and Paulette Borgo, who played a significant role in my conversion. Jesus said you will know them by their love.

To James Dority, the artist of my book cover and brother in Christ.

To brother Ezell Smith, for his contribution to this book. Thanks, Smithy!

To Jen Culltertin Johnson, for her expertise, time, and care.

I want to thank my niece, Caitlyn, for her expertise and time spent helping me bring this book to completion. For both her parents, Ron and Joan, who planted the right seeds of love and parenthood to produce the best fruit.

I want to thank you all with my whole heart!

    Innocence

My name is John Torres, and this is how my life began. I was born on September 3, 1955. I entered life and began my journey on Chicago’s South Side, where I was raised by both my parents in a three-flat apartment building. My Grandpa T and two of his adult children lived on the second floor, my aunt and uncle lived on the first floor with three of my cousins, and I lived on the third floor with my parents and my brother Tony. I think I may have known people from at least a mile in every direction. Within walking distance, we had a homemade ice cream parlor, three movie theaters, and boys’ clubs where we could spend time with mentors and do constructive things with our time. I remember the board games, swimming, archery, and shooting lessons where we were taught how to take a .22 caliber rifle apart, clean it, and put it back together again. We learned gun safety and had target practice. I remember the fresh fruit trucks parked on the corners and the newspapers delivered to your home. As a young boy, people seemed so friendly, and there was a sense of community in the neighborhood. Most homes had fresh milk and juice delivered daily, and we didn’t need to concern ourselves with anyone stealing from us.
